U Mobile chosen by MCMC to implement second 5G network in Malaysia; Maxis wants answers
The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has announced that U Mobile Sdn Bhd is the chosen mobile operator to implement the nation’s second 5G network.
In a statement published on 1st November 2024, MCMC stated that the decision to select U Mobile was based on rigorous and detailed deliberations concerning technical and commercial aspects. MCMC also asserted that the decision was made in the interest of maximizing the potential of 5G technology for the people, the industry, and the nation.
U Mobile has since expressed gratitude to the Malaysian government, stating that its 17 years of industry experience puts them in good stead to lead Malaysia’s Second 5G Network rollout.
Prior to this, the two mobile operators considered to be in strong contention to lead the project were Maxis and CelcomDigi, both of which are currently the leading telco operators in the country.
In the aftermath of the decision, Free Malaysia Today (FMT) has reported that Maxis will hold talks with MCMC to probe further into why U Mobile was chosen. In a statement, Maxis announced, “We will engage with MCMC to understand the rationale for their decision and we will consider our options after discussions with all stakeholders.”
It should be noted that U Mobile is allowed to collaborate with other MNOs in the implementation of the nation’s second 5G network.
