U Mobile has successfully conducted a 5G network trial on the first Penang Bridge, achieving a minimum speed of 120Mbps across the entire 13.5km stretch. The trial, conducted in collaboration with Huawei, used Meta Active Antenna Unit (MetaAAU) technology to improve network performance and reliability.

The trial deployed Huawei’s MetaAAU at both ends of the bridge. The technology incorporates an Extremely Large Antenna Array (ELAA) and beamforming algorithms, which double the number of antenna elements to enhance signal coverage and stability. During the trial, users experienced an average speed of 597Mbps, with no dropped calls even at vehicle speeds of 80km/h. These results mark a significant improvement over legacy 4G solutions.

U Mobile claims that once the 5G network is fully commercialized, commuters using the Penang Bridge will benefit from smooth 4K video streaming, seamless short video switching, immersive gaming, and HD live broadcasts. The network is also expected to enable future enterprise applications, including road safety services, AI-driven surveillance, and emergency response drones.

Woon Ooi Yuen, Chief Technology Officer of U Mobile, stated, “As Malaysia’s future second 5G network provider, U Mobile is delighted to have successfully completed this 5G trial with Huawei as it demonstrates our ability to leverage next gen technologies to significantly improve connectivity experiences for Malaysia.”

He added, “This trial showcases our commitment to innovation and reflects our capability to roll out the nation’s second 5G network efficiently and effectively, ensuring seamless connectivity even in challenging environments. With 5G-A, we will be able to provide future enterprise use cases along the bridge, such as road safety services, surveillance with AI capabilities, and drones for emergency situations.”

Huawei Malaysia also expressed its support for the initiative. Zac Chow, Vice President of Huawei Technologies (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd’s Carrier Network Business Group, stated, “This achievement reinforces our strong partnership with U Mobile and our shared commitment to fast-tracking Malaysia’s digital transformation, enabling operators like U Mobile to drive the development of advanced telecom services.”
