This Is the Nyamuk Killer We Want to See in Malaysia

As Malaysians, we are no strangers to mosquito problems, particularly during the rainy season when dengue-transmitting Aedes mosquitoes start to run amok. We all know the drill – empty your bins, remove stagnant water, and keep repellents handy where possible.
But what if there were another solution, one that takes an active approach in eliminating these pests from your home? Well, that’s exactly what this laser-powered mosquito-killing machine offers. Dubbed the Photonmatrix, it’s an anti-mosquito air defense system that uses lasers to zap mosquitoes on sight.

Now, before you get your hopes up, this is still a crowdfunding project on Indiegogo, which simply means it is not a finished product yet. That being said, there’s a good chance it will come to fruition, as the project has already exceeded its initial fixed goal of RM83,888. It now stands with backing of over RM2 million (RM2,021,368 at the time of writing).
The man behind the project, Jim Wong from Changzhou, China, says the Photonmatrix uses high-specification LiDAR and laser technology to identify and eliminate mosquitoes within a certain radius. The size of that radius depends on the model you purchase.

Based on its official crowdfunding page, two variants are listed: a Basic and a Pro edition. The key difference between the two is that the Basic model’s laser shooter has a 3m radius, while the Pro edition has a 6m radius.
If you’re wondering how effective the machine is, you can see for yourself in this video demonstration:
As per the product description: “When an object significantly larger than a mosquito enters the detection range, the system can swiftly and accurately identify it and refrain from laser activation. Conversely, when a mosquito is detected, the system completes identification and laser engagement within an extremely short timeframe.”

Mosquitoes aside, the machine is also well-equipped to bring down other flying pests, such as sand flies and fruit flies – provided their flight speed is no more than 1 meter/second and they fall within a size range of 2–20 mm.
“It is safe enough and will not harm people, pets, or even distant birds, etc.”
According to its creators, the machine is best used under shade, as this prevents raindrops or other sediments from dirtying the glass panel. Nevertheless, it is still weatherproofed with an IP68 rating.
To reiterate, this is still in the Indiegogo crowdfunding phase; therefore, it is not yet a finished product. However, with the project exceeding its fixed goal by a country mile, it definitely seems promising. If you would like to contribute to the development of the Photonmatrix, you can do so on the project’s Indiegogo page.
