The Top 5 Most Hyped Reveals From The Game Awards 2024
Geoff Keighley’s The Game Awards 2024 event took place in December 2024, and there were a lot of announcements (check them all in one easily accessible article by heading over here).
However, some of the announcements were definitely more exciting than others. Here are our top five from The Game Awards 2024:
Onimusha Way Of The Sword
A brand new Onimusha game is coming in 2026 after decades of absence (since 2006’s Onimusha Dawn Of Dreams). Fans of the franchise have waited for almost 20 long years without a new game and no other game franchise has managed to feel like an Onimusha game ever since (the closest is perhaps the Nioh games but Onimusha was never a Soulslike).
The Onimusha franchise was one of the most beloved Capcom franchises in the PS2 era, so it’s high time that it returns. However, I hope that Capcom stays true to the traditional action gameplay (with a sprinkle of survival horror) of the original games instead of making the new Onimusha another Soulslike (although the trailer does exhibit some Soulslike vibes).
Developed by Capcom, Onimusha Way Of The Sword is in development for the PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC. Featuring epic sword fights, a lone samurai wields a sharpened blade and the Oni Gauntlet. Amidst the rush of battle and a deluge of blood, he ponders on his reason for fighting. Set in Kyoto in the early Edo period, the historic city has been transformed by the nefarious Malice with monstrous enemies known as Genma stalking the area around.
The Witcher 4
The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt will be ten years in 2025 and (arguably) no other open-world fantasy game has managed to recapture the same magic of that game. It was pretty much inevitable that CD Projekt Red would return to the franchise and it’s nice to see that the next game will not only continue the franchise (instead of another lazy remake or reboot), it also features Ciri as the protagonist carrying the torch from Geralt.
This has the potential to be another game of the generation like The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt but only if CD Projekt Red learns from the mistakes of Cyberpunk 2077. At the time of writing, there are no platforms and release windows/dates so the game is likely still years away.
Split Fiction
Josef Fares may like to talk big but he proved his mettle with It Takes Two being one of the best games during the year that it was released, offering a unique co-op experience that could be played by gamers of all ages. It looks like Hazelight Studios and him could continue that streak with Split Fiction, another co-op game but this time with more realistic graphics, as well as featuring an interesting mix of sci-fi and fantasy elements.
Split Fiction releases for the PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC on 6 March 2025.
Elden Ring Nightreign
More than any other game in recent years, Elden Ring has been dominating the space. Every other Soulslike since 2022 has had the daunting task of being measured to Elden Ring, so of course, FromSoftware would eventually return to the game. However, the surprise is that we’re not getting a sequel yet but instead, a standalone adventure within the Elden Ring universe with more of a multiplayer focus, featuring three-player cooperative play.
Elden Ring Nightreign launches on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC sometime in 2025.
