Therefore, I was grinning from ear to ear when we were tasked with reviewing an Epson projector. Let’s just say, it’s one thing to feast your eyes on new audiovisual tech, it’s another when you get to do so in a private mini-theatre, watching HDR videos via a high-tech projector.

And not just any normal projector – the Epson EH-QL3000W Home Theatre 4K 3LCD Laser Projector is one of the brand’s most exciting marquee offerings. As such, the projector is loaded with a slew of flagship features that promise to deliver a transformative visual experience. Seeing this up close was truly impressive.

Walking into the demo room, the Epson EH-QL3000W projector was already mounted on an extension from the ceiling. And boy, did it look like a blockbuster machine. If you’re a fan of HDR content, we can say with full confidence that this projector will maximize the experience to the fullest. Moreover, the projector’s 3LCD tech flaunted its quality with exceptional renders of deep blacks and saturated colours. If you need the spec sheet to give you confidence, the EH-QL3000W delivers a contrast ratio of over 5,000,000:1. Couple that with 4K resolution and you’ll have a binge experience of a lifetime.

On that note, the Epson EH-QL3000W boasts an impressive maximum brightness of 6,000 lumens. It’s interesting because, well, why do projectors need that much brightness anyway? Typical projectors tend to lose out devastatingly on colours and contrast when brightness is pushed too high, to the point content appears washed out and unpleasant. That’s why most theatres – whether home or commercial – air their screenings in dark rooms.

It’s the same here. The EH-QL3000W works best with the lights off. However, Epson has engineered it so that the EH-QL3000W performs brilliantly even in a semi-lit room. We were lucky enough to witness firsthand the quality it displayed in a room with dimmed yellow ambient lighting – much like movie theatres before the official screening. To our surprise, colours remained true, and the images were still thoroughly cinematic without any pale hues creeping in.

It’s worth noting that most projector brands don’t offer this level of brightness natively. Epson is one of the rare brands to do so, but more importantly, they’ve made the EH-QL3000W capable of retaining HDR quality and exceptional colours even under the glow of ambient lighting, making it ideal for home theatre setups.

On that note, the Epson EH-QL3000W lenses are interchangeable if you want more oomph and flexibility in your home theatre. There’s a whole range of Epson lenses you can add on, for a price. That being said, the standard lens itself is incredibly sharp and more than enough to blow you away.

At this point, you’re likely wondering if gaming is any good here. In short, yes, it is. The Epson EH-QL3000W not only supports 4K at 120fps but also features Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) for gaming-optimized performance.

The Epson EH-QL3000W offers a solid selection of ports to suit your setup, with the RS-232C port being the highlight, as it allows the projector to integrate with a central smart home system. Versatile IP control options make it easy to connect with popular smart home systems, simplifying the setup and network management for dealers.
