The Bumpboxx BB-777 pays homage to the cassette boomboxes of the 80s

If you grew up in the 80s, you probably remember boomboxes. These big radios, often seen slugged around on someone’s shoulder, blasted music to everyone around, and the most famous of these was probably the Sharp GF-777. While it’s nearly impossible to find one today especially in Malaysia, you can however get the Bumpboxx BB-777, a modern recreation of the boombox with retro styling and modern features.

Just like an actual boombox from the past, the BB-777 has dual cassette decks with a analogue buttons and dials, with even the features printed over the speaker grills like the GF-777. However, since we’re in 2026, the BB-77 also gets an LCD screen, Bluetooth, a CD player, AM/FM/SW radio, USB audio input and aux input. You’ll even be able to record from tape, CD and radio straight into a plugged in USB drive if you wish. That’s on top of two mic inputs for I don’t know, karaoke and rap battles perhaps.

As for the actual speakers themselves, there’s six in total with two woofers, two coaxial speakers and two horn tweeters. And while the original GF-777 pushed out 90W, the BB-777 claims to push out a total of 270W, so you should be able to be three times as loud as the original boombox that inspired it. The speakers have been ported too, which means better low frequency output for bass-heavy music. Powering the BB-777 are swappable lithium batteries, with up to 15 hours of playback.

Bumpboxx has decided to go with the Kickstarter route for the BB-777. Usually priced at USD 1,099 (~RM4,354.24), early backers can get the BB-777 from just USD 649 (~RM2571.34). There’s a bunch of optional addons and accessories too, such as extra batteries and storage bags, along with exclusive ‘Founder Editions’ that cost more but come in extra funky colourways.

At time of writing, it has garnered over USD 2.6million in funding already, blowing past its original goal of USD 50,000. To back the project and get one yourself (worldwide shipping is available), you can click here to head to its Kickstarter page.
