Telekom Malaysia signs 3-year 5G deal with U Mobile, terminates previous DNB agreement

U Mobile, the country’s second 5G network provider, has announced a three year 5G wholesale contract with Telekom Malaysia (TM), after a structured evaluation process. This will likely see TM’s Unifi Mobile migrate its 5G services over to U Mobile’s 5G network, with TM also terminating its access agreement with Digital Nasional Berhad.
In a press release by U Mobile, the telco claimed that the agreement with TM reflects the strength of its technical expertise, service capabilities and commitment to delivering on its next-gen 5G infrastructure, with their target of 80% coverage of population by second half of this year already ahead of schedule. The deal with TM will see them provide end-to-end 5G Multi Operator Core Network (MOCN) services to TM, which includes comprehensive provisioning, seamless system integration, activation and rigorous testing of its 5G network.
U Mobile is delighted to be appointed as TM’s 5G wholesale partner. We were selected after a structured evaluation process and the award is testament to the strength of our next gen 5G network capabilities.
We are confident in our ability to deliver superior performance, reliability, robust security and enhanced customer experience to TM, supporting its ambitions to strengthen mobile competitiveness and advance its convergence strategy,” – Wong Heang Tuck, U Mobile CEO
Wong added that this deal with TM is more than just a commercial milestone, as it also underscores the value of a healthy infrastructure competition in building a resilient and sustainable telecommunications ecosystem, and that they look forward to working closely with TM.
TM’s press release meanwhile also acknowledged its new 5G MOCN agreement with U Mobile, and that it has exercised its contractual rights under its 5G access agreement with Digital Nasional Berhad to terminate its current arrangement subject to regulatory processes and requirements. TM also showed their gratitude to DNB for the latter’s pioneering role in accelerating Malaysia’s 5G rollout.
