As reported by Bernama, Selangor recorded a total of 5,091 fraud cases in 2024, with losses amounting to RM386.4 million. This was according to Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, in response to a question raised by assemblyman Azmizam Zaman Huri during the Selangor State Legislative Assembly.
Datuk Seri Amirudin added that although the number of recorded cases had decreased by 169 compared to the 5,260 reported cases reported in 2023, the total losses were higher.
Speaking to the state assembly, Datuk Seri Amirudin stated: “The total losses recorded due to online fraud in 2023 were RM292,093,647.17. While the number of cases has decreased, the recorded losses surged to RM386,426,494.32.”
He also noted that most victims were retirees and individuals without full-time jobs.
To combat this, the Selangor Menteri Besar urged the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to intensify efforts to reduce, prevent, and block fraudulent online content.
Despite measures taken by MCMC and major telcos to ward off online fraud, scam cases remain prevalent. It is important to remain vigilant against unfamiliar phone numbers and suspicious links.
If you have been a victim of an online scam, contact the Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) Scam Response Centre immediately at 03-2610 1559 or 03-2610 1599. You can also reach out via WhatsApp at the CCID Infoline: 013-211 1222.
