Samsung Unveils Tri-Fold Smartphone Prototype to Take On HUAWEI Mate XT

A new era of Samsung foldables is on the horizon, as the Korean titan has revealed its own iteration of a tri-folding phone ahead of the 2025 APEC Summit taking place in Korea.
Although the summit is only slated to begin on 31 October, footage from what appears to be inside the hall showcases the phone displayed within an enclosed glass panel. Overlaying the clear see-through glass are graphic animations demonstrating how the phone will adopt the three-angle fold.

Based on the animations, Samsung has opted for a double inward hinge, meaning both folding layers close in on top of each other like a book. Interestingly, this differs from HUAWEI’s tri-folding Mate XT, which uses both inward and outward hinges—where the top layer folds onto the middle screen, and the bottom screen folds beneath—forming a ‘Z’-shaped folding structure.
As for Samsung’s model, since the phone itself is enclosed in a case, it doesn’t seem like the company is allowing any hands-on experience for public scrutiny. This is understandable, as it’s still largely a prototype model. In fact, we don’t even have an official name for the device yet, with rumours suggesting it could either slot into the Z Fold series (in which case the “Galaxy Z TriFold” seems probable) or debut as part of a new G Series.

This 6.5 inch display can transform into a 10 inch tablet when unfolded. Crazy! 😮

In its unfolded form, the Samsung tri-fold is expected to measure a modest 6.5 inches—roughly the size of a typical bar phone. When all three displays are in play, it opens up to a 10-inch form factor, akin to a mini tablet.
Details about the phone are still scarce. Even Samsung hasn’t set a release date yet. However, given that the company has reached the stage of confidence where it’s willing to put the phone on display, we’d expect it to launch in the near to medium future.
