It’s no secret that a Samsung tri-folding phone has been in the works for some time now. In fact, Samsung even teased the tri-fold earlier this year by blasting a digital mockup of the phone at the January Galaxy Unpacked event.

While some were hopeful that the tri-fold would launch alongside the Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip, that proved not to be the case. Nevertheless, the wait seems to be nearing its end, as word has gotten out that Samsung will unveil its first-ever tri-folding phone in October this year. The news comes from prominent Samsung leakster Ice Universe via his Weibo account.

Details about the phone remain scarce, as no one can even confidently confirm its official model name. There is reason to believe it could be christened the ‘Galaxy Z TriFold’, which would make sense, seeing how it fits seamlessly into Samsung’s existing Galaxy Z foldables lineup.

Supporting that claim, SamMobile (via Galaxy Club) reports that Samsung has applied to trademark the term ‘Galaxy Z TriFold’. However, this could simply be an industry practice to protect potential model names in advance. There’s also the possibility that the name may never come to light.

Before the ‘Galaxy Z TriFold’ name surfaced, rumors suggested the trifold would be called the ‘Samsung G Fold’. That idea seems to have faded somewhat, and a name within the ‘Z’ convention appears more in line with Samsung’s current catalog.

Though not yet confirmed, leaks from Android Authority point to a double inward hinge design, where both the left and right displays fold toward the center, essentially stacking on top of each other.

This differs from the HUAWEI Mate XT tri-fold, which features one inward hinge and one outward hinge: the left panel folds inward while the right panel folds outward, forming a ‘Z’-shaped folding structure. Our hands-on experience with the Mate XT was impressive, and it will be interesting to see whether Samsung’s iteration of the tri-fold can match that standard. The Mate XT remains the only commercially available tri-fold, retailing at a staggering RM14,999 in Malaysia.

On that note, leakster Ice Universe also claimed that HUAWEI’s second-generation tri-fold could launch in September, just a month before Samsung’s.
