Samsung has already discontinued the Galaxy Z TriFold, just months after launch

The Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold debuted late last year to much fanfare, thanks it part to it being the Korean giant’s first triple folding smartphone. However, it seems that they won’t be many more Galaxy Z TriFolds making their way to users, as Samsung confirms they’ll be axing the foldable, with no new units being made once current inventory gets sold.

The Galaxy Z TriFold was only available for purchase in a few countries, namely Korea, the US, China, Singapore and the UAE. Earlier this week, Korean media outlets began reporting that the TriFold was getting one last restock, with no future restock updates after that. In the US meanwhile it’s already been listed as sold out on the Samsung US website, though it seems that physical stores still have some TriFolds left on sale.

There are a couple of likely reasons why Samsung has given up on the Galaxy Z TriFold. The most crucial factor appears to be high production costs; we are in the midst of a memory and storage shortage, on top of shaky geopolitical tensions leading to rising fuel prices too. Despite its USD2,899 price tag, the Galaxy Z TriFold apparently isn’t profitable anymore for Samsung to continue making.

The Galaxy Z TriFold hasn’t exactly been flying off shelves either. It’s been reported that the triple folding smartphone only moved about 6,000 units in its home country of Korea. Huawei on the other hand, the other leading foldable smartphone manufacturer, has already launched the Mate XT Ultimate globally, with a second generation Mate XTs available in China too.

We’re not even sure if we’ll see a second generation triple folding smartphone from Samsung at this point. Samsung executives have previously been reported saying that they haven’t committed towards a second generation TriFold just yet, but will take elements of it such as the larger display and wide aspect ratio and integrate them into other Samsung foldables in the future.
