The A series has gone through a little bit of a facelift from the 2022 models. The first obvious difference is that the A54 no longer has the rounded rectangular camera module that was on the A53. In fact, the A54 no longer has a camera module, period. It is now just three vertical lenses integrated into the back panels, offering a clean minimalistic look.

On that note, we also bid goodbye to the plastic panels that were a staple on the A series up until this point. The A54 welcomes a glass back era made sturdy with Corning Gorilla Glass 5, the same hardy material which you’ll find on the front displays as well.

Onto CPUs, both models utilizes Samsung’s proprietary Exynos processors, but the Galaxy A54 packs the latest Exynos 1380 compared to the Exynos 1280 on the A53. According to benchmark tests run by NanoReview, the Galaxy A54 outperforms the Galaxy A53 by a whopping 29%, which is quite a substantial amount given that the models are only a year apart.

There is a hairline difference in display sizes with the A53 measuring 6.5″ versus the 6.4″ on the A54. Regardless, both displays are Super AMOLED, packs Full HD+ resolution, and have 120Hz max refresh rates. However, the A53 does not have adaptive refresh rates, only allowing you to toggle between Standard and High; while the A54 gives you the option of Standard and Adaptive, which should help in battery efficiency in the long run.

Unlike the A54, the A53 unfortunately does not come with HDR10 support, which may be a major turnoff for some.

Cameras

In the case of cameras, Samsung has downsized from the quad cameras on the A53 to a triple camera system on the A54. You will also notice that the main camera on the A53 has the larger megapixel count, which may seem like you’re working with a inferior camera on the A54. But that is not the case, as the A54 packs a larger sensor underneath, which usually translates to brighter photos and improved performance in low-light environments.

OS and Security Updates

You are guaranteed four major OS upgrades and 5 years of security updates on both the Galaxy A53 and the Galaxy A54 from the year the model was launched.

This will mean that for the A53, you will be secured up until 2027, while the later model A54 will keep you updated until 2028.

Similarities

Despite the differences, you will still find similarities between both devices. For instance, you’ll be glad to know that they both pack stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos certification, and they each have a 5,000mAh battery with support only for 25W wired charging.

Resistance is also on par with IP67 water and dust resistant, and neither models have a 3.5mm audio jack.
