RON95 Petrol Subsidy: Targeted Rollout Plan to Be Revealed by End of September 2025

The Ministry of Finance (MoF) has confirmed that detailed plans for the implementation of targeted subsidies for RON95 petrol will be announced by the end of September 2025. This timeline aligns with the earlier statement made by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on July 23.

RON95 Petrol Subsidy Rationalization

In a written response to Parliament, the MoF stated that the government is currently in the advanced stages of developing and testing the subsidy targeting mechanism. The process involves refining and integrating data from multiple government agencies, including the National Registration Department, the Road Transport Department, and the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DoSM).

The objective is to ensure that the RON95 petrol subsidy reaches the intended recipients in a more efficient and targeted manner.

The update was provided in response to a question from Mohd Sany Hamzan (PH-Hulu Langat), who had asked for progress details on the subsidy retargeting initiative, particularly regarding the front-end and back-end implementation stages previously announced by the Economy Ministry.

According to the MoF, once the mechanism is implemented, eligible Malaysians will be able to purchase RON95 petrol at a subsidised price of RM1.99 per litre using MyKad for verification. Those who are not eligible, including non-citizens, will be required to pay the full market price.

Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan, who has assumed the responsibilities of the Economy Minister, had earlier stated that the first practical application of the Central Database Hub (PADU) will support the rollout of the targeted RON95 petrol subsidies, pending its full implementation.
