Roblox CEO Wants to Turn the Game Into a Dating Hub – It’s Not as Disturbing as It Sounds

Roblox has long stood apart from other gaming platforms, thanks to its modular, community-driven structure. While Fortnite only recently embraced user-generated content with creative maps, Roblox has been operating this way for over a decade, enabling fans to quickly create and share experiences tied to current trends—like the surge in Squid Game-inspired games following the show’s second season.

Now, the company behind the platform is setting its sights beyond its well-known child-focused reputation.

Roblox As A Dating Platform?

David Baszucki, Roblox CEO

In a recent podcast interview with TechStuff, Roblox CEO David Baszucki outlined the company’s evolving strategy. While games like Dress to Impress and Squid Game remain popular, Baszucki reiterated Roblox’s broader vision of becoming a platform suitable for older demographics—including, unexpectedly, as a space for dating.

The idea of Roblox becoming a dating platform has understandably sparked skepticism, especially given its large user base of minors. However, Baszucki clarified that the goal isn’t to encourage random matchmaking, but to provide a virtual setting for adults to interact—particularly for those hesitant to date in real life. According to him, “a lot of people who are too afraid to go on a real-life date might find it easier to have a virtual date to start.”

To support this shift, Roblox has introduced features aimed at keeping age-restricted content separate. Access to 17+ experiences requires users to verify their age with documentation, and systems are in place to automatically block the sharing of identifiable information. Despite this, enforcement has proven imperfect, with reports of minors using parental identification to bypass restrictions—evident in voice chat segments of some 17+ games.

This push toward becoming a more adult-oriented platform isn’t new. During Roblox’s 2023 keynote, the company announced plans to tap into the 17+ market, framing dating as just one part of a broader strategy to evolve beyond its child-centric image. Baszucki also emphasized using Roblox as a platform for wellness and education. He has spoken before about the potential for Roblox to support mental health, especially as digital spaces become central to social development among younger users.

Baszucki has even drawn comparisons to his personal life, explaining his cautious optimism. “I’m not comfortable having [my kids] at the end of the dock right now without a life jacket on,” he said, reflecting a parental perspective on navigating new technologies. But he believes Roblox has the potential to implement these changes in a more responsible and civil way than most tech platforms.

While the ambition to expand into areas like dating, education, and wellness is clear, progress remains slow. Roblox still has a long way to go to truly redefine its identity and break free from its reputation as a game for kids. With the broader Metaverse losing traction and Roblox’s stock seeing declines, whether these long-term goals will materialize remains uncertain.
