iPhone 16 and 16 Plus: new Camera Control button and slight redesign; Here’s the official pricing in Malaysia

By Timothy Teoh September 11, 2024

After a swirl of rumours leading up to the date, we finally have the latest generation of iPhones fully unwrapped.

Through Apple’s own words, the iPhone 16 Series are ‘built from the ground up with Apple Intelligence’ (we’re not kidding when we say we heard this at least 5 times throughout the keynote) with plenty of emphasis on upcoming AI features.

Before we get to that though, let’s touch on hardware first.

The obvious change comes in a slight redesign in camera arrangement. Apple has done away with the diagonal setup and has returned to the vertically-aligned format. The two lenses you see consists of a 48MP main camera with 2x in-sensor zoom, and an upgraded 12MP ultrawide camera that’s also utilized for macro shots.

One of the bigger upgrades Apple has taken is to leapfrog the A17 chip altogether and incorporate their latest A18 chip into the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus. According to Apple, the newly developed A18 chip has a 16-core neural engine and a 6-core CPU that’s more capable in handling Apple Intelligence, and is also 30% faster than the iPhone 15.

One other thing that’s new: a Camera Control button along the side panels. Camera Control, in essence, provides a more intuitive photo-taking experience. A single click will launch the camera app, after which it also acts as a shutter button to snap photos. It supports more gestures too, such as a light press to bring up a designated function (for example, zoom), and two light presses to bring up a list of controllable functions such as exposure and depth-of-field – all of which can be adjusted simply running your fingers lightly over the Camera Control button.

Here comes the first Apple Intelligence bit. The Camera Control is also home to Visual Intelligence, an AI feature that allows you to search up a subject immediately when you snap a photo using the button. It’s like Circle to Search, without the circling. However, this does come with the benefit of adding an event directly to your calendar by deriving information off a poster or flyer.

More Apple Intelligence features includes Writing Tools for auto rewriting and proofreading. You can also create new emojis with Genmoji, as well as find images in your gallery simply by typing a description. Apple has also taken the initiative to introduce Private Cloud Compute which they claim will protect your security when accessing server-based AI services with the assurance that your data is never stored.

Do note that many of these features are still in beta, and will only arrive at a later date.

When it comes to sizing, nothing has changed. The iPhone 16 still keeps to 6.1 inches while the Plus model is maintained at 6.7 inches.

As for colours, the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus are available in Ultramarine, Teal, Pink, White, and Black.
