realme reveals 10,000mAh concept phone; But will we ever see it in stores?

A 10,000mAh smartphone that’s commercially available is rare, but not impossible – as proven by realme. To fill you in, realme has just unveiled a smartphone packing a megalithic 10,000mAh battery. Albeit only a concept model, the fact that it exists in the first place can be taken as a sign of things to come. But, will it ever be available off the shelves at your nearest tech store?

Let us say this one thing first: phones with more than 10,000mAh already exist. One example that comes to mind is the Oukitel WP100 Titan, which boasts not 10,000, not 20,000, not even 30,000 – but a mindboggling 33,000mAh battery. That’s about six times the size of your average modern day smartphone.

If you haven’t heard of Oukitel, they’re a brand that specializes in creating some of the hardiest smartphones in the market. They’re built for outdoorsmen and women who’d rather be in the thick of nature funneling water from leaves than snuggled up safely in their blankets short circuiting their brains on TikTok (aka, me).

The reason Oukitel phones aren’t catered to pillowed folks like me is, well, because a lot of their phones are the size of a brick. Take the WP100 Titan, for example, where the marketing video literally shows a man hammering a peg with the phone as he pitches his tent, then using it as a bottle opener to wrench the cap open. Can you imagine a phone of that caliber falling squarely on your face when you’ve dozed off?

Probably best to use a hammer next time…
Desperate times calls for desperate measures, I guess?

The point here is, phones with massive batteries usually come in a less-than-ideal form factor. But here’s the fun part: realme claims that this new concept 10,000mAh phone has an ultra-slim body measuring only 8.5mm thick and weighs just over 200g. Think about it – a 10,000mAh battery in a form factor similar to all other mainstream smartphones.

That’s one drawback ingeniously solved by the engineers at realme.

There is one other concern to take note of, and that’s charging. If you’ve ever owned a phone with 90W or higher charging speeds, you’ll know how hot it can get. Not just the phone, but the adapters as well. For the sake of thermal management, a balance needs to be struck between battery capacity and charging speeds. That has so far been achieved by realme, who just launched the GT 7 Pro with its 6,500mAh battery supporting 120W charging.

While pushing 120W into a 10,000mAh battery sounds feasible on paper, I do wonder about the amount of heat it would generate when charging a battery of that capacity. Moreover, although not officially disclosed, word from the rumour mill is that realme has created a 320W adapter for this 10,000mAh battery. Even so, I can only imagine that the power required to drive that wattage will still result in high temperatures, which brings us back to square one.

To realme’s credit, in the unboxing video by Chace Xu, the President of realme Global Marketing, he assured viewers that the concept phone had a “Triple cold press” feature to “improve battery swelling”. However, no official heat readings were provided.

There are other concerns, of course. A large battery often requires major restructuring of the inner compartments, and perhaps even compromises on certain features, such as camera sensors, cooling chambers, and speakers.

Nevertheless, the fact that realme is ready to flaunt its feathers of the conceptual GT 10,000mAh phone speaks volumes. And that they did it in a shape that’s consumer-friendly is a highly commendable feat. The era of 10,000mAh batteries does seem like it needs some ironing up, but I can’t help but feel it’s on the horizon.

In the meantime, the realme GT 10,000mAh is one to take note of, perhaps not in the near future, but soon enough.
