Proton Xchange Programme Launched: Boosting Road Safety and Green Mobility

By Aiman Maulana May 19, 2025

In alignment with Malaysia’s push for road safety and environmental sustainability, Proton has officially launched the Proton Xchange Programme. This strategic initiative encourages owners of old, unroadworthy vehicles to trade them in for a brand-new Proton model, including the popular Proton e.MAS 7, Malaysia’s best-selling electric vehicle (EV).

PROTON Xchange Programme: A Nationwide Initiative for All Car Owners

Open to all car brands, the Proton Xchange Programme is designed to reduce the number of unsafe vehicles on Malaysian roads while promoting eco-friendly transportation. Developed in partnership with Car Medic Sdn Bhd, a certified Authorized Automotive Treatment Facility (AATF), the programme offers practical incentives and a streamlined process for car owners looking to upgrade.

The launch event, held at the Proton Centre of Excellence in Subang Jaya, was officiated by YB Anthony Loke Siew Fook, Malaysia’s Minister of Transport. Key representatives from Proton, including Chairman Tan Sri Syed Faisal Albar and CEO Dr. Li Chunrong, were also present alongside stakeholders from the Road Transport Department (JPJ), MIROS, MARii, and other government agencies.

RM4.8 Million Allocated to Promote Safer, Greener Vehicles

To support this ambitious programme, Proton has allocated RM4.8 million in funding. Participants will receive RM2,000 in overtrade support toward a new Proton vehicle, including EVs and mild-hybrids. The programme runs until 31 December 2025 and is available to owners of vehicles 15 years or older that are no longer safe or economically viable to repair.

Eligible vehicles include:

  • Sedans
  • MPVs
  • Vans
  • 4x4s
  • Lorries
  • Buses

Participants must provide documentation such as a Vehicle Ownership Certificate (VOC), a JPJK1KD form (to confirm JPJ deregistration), and a Certificate of Destruction (COD) from Car Medic. Notably, the new vehicle can be registered under the name of the owner’s next of kin, increasing flexibility for families.

Seamless Deregistration with Car Medic’s e-Dereg Service

As an AATF certified by the Department of Environment (DOE) and appointed by JPJ, Car Medic simplifies the deregistration process through its e-Dereg service. This service offers door-to-door collection or in-facility support, including:

  • Deregistration checks
  • Towing and safe vehicle disposal
  • COD issuance

For added convenience, MyKad holders in selected areas can complete deregistration digitally from their home location, and bulk deregistration for groups of five or more vehicles is also supported within two days.

With internal combustion engines (ICE), mild-hybrid, and electric models, Proton is the only Malaysian carmaker offering a full range of powertrains. As the brand prepares to launch its second EV model, it continues to play a leading role in Malaysia’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

To make it more enticing, Transport Minister YB Anthony Loke mentioned that all vehicles purchased through the Proton Xchange Programme will be eligible for a first-year tax exemption. He’s also encouraging other OEMs to follow suit with a similar initiative.
