Proton releases X Watch at RM1499; remote vehicle controls for X50 and X70

Proton recently made a surprise move by releasing their first ever smartwatch, the Proton X Watch. The X Watch grants a host of remote vehicle controls to Proton’s X lineup, the X50 and X70, which is presumably what the ‘X’ in X Watch refers to.

The X Watch was developed by ACO Tech and is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. According to lowyat.net, ACO Tech also developed the ATLAS infotainment systems on certain Proton variants.

The X Watch is subtly elegant. It has a simple rounded 1.3-inch AMOLED display outlined with ceramic bezels, and held within a stainless steel case. The screen is made with scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass DX+.

From what we’ve seen so far, the X Watch comes in two strap colours – white and black. The X Watch does not have a crown (the rotating notch typically used to control the watch hands), but it does have two pusher buttons. The top button is the function key, while the bottom button is the vehicle control key which will give you access to the remote vehicle controls.

What you can control with the X Watch

With the X Watch, you can control functions such as door locks, windows, horns, lights, trunk release, and air-conditioning. This is applicable to all X70 models and the X50 Premium and Flagship models.

On top of that, you can also monitor key readings. This includes your car’s next service, mileage, and the distance-to-empty reading.

Drivers of the two mentioned X50 variants will also get remote engine start. The X70 unfortunately misses out on this feature.

Aside from that, the X Watch functions as a standard fitness watch. It features all the fundamental attributes of a smart watch, with 8 sport modes including running, cycling, and climbing. In addition, it also has heart rate monitoring and blood oxygen sensor.

The Proton X Watch is priced at RM1,499.

But at this moment in time, it’s hard to find the X that marks the spot for the X Watch.

Proton released the X Watch without much fanfare. No launches, no announcements on their Facebook or Instagram. Not even Proton’s official website mentions anything about the X Watch. It’s unclear why Proton has decided to keep the X watch under the radar, but it seems the best way to get one is to directly contact a Proton dealership to see if the X Watch is available. Even so, you might not find success.

Perhaps Proton is waiting for the right time to release the X Watch en masse? Either way, the X Watch is an interesting project by Proton and provides something new to Malaysia’s local automotive scene.
