May 17, 2021

OnePlus Malaysia has officially launched the latest OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro 5G powered by a Snapdragon 888 chipset in Malaysia. Both these devices will be available for exclusive first sales on May 18 via Shopee and Lazada.

Priced at RM3,699 and RM4,299 respectively, let’s take a quick look at the key differences between both devices to see if the OnePlus 9 Pro 5G is worth paying an additional RM600 for.

In terms of display, you’ll be enjoying a slightly bigger and better display on the OnePlus 9 Pro 5G. With a higher overall nits of 1,300 and a higher resolution, you can expect an overall display that is crisper on the Pro edition.

Lastly, the 9 Pro is also equipped with LTPO technology which allows the device to dynamically adjust refresh rates to help reduce overall battery consumption.

Nevertheless, based on some reports and test conducted, it seems that the OnePlus 9 still has an edge over the OnePlus 9 Pro in battery life despite having this feature.

Perhaps one of the most anticipated features of the OnePlus 9 series is the Hasselblad colour calibrated camera sets. Between the 9 and 9 Pro, there are some minor differences between the camera sets offered.

While both the 9 and 9 Pro are equipped with a 48MP primary camera, the 9 Pro does offer a better Sony IMX766 sensor. With the difference in sensor, the image output is most noticeable when shooting under low light conditions.

In addition to that, the 9 Pro also comes with an additional 8MP Telephoto camera for an enhanced shooting experience for zoomed photos. Lastly, it is important to note that the 9 Pro also comes complete with optical image stabilization (OIS) while the prior does not.

3. IP Ratings

The OnePlus Pro 9 5G has an IP68 rating while the OnePlus 9 does not. Nevertheless, OnePlus has stated that the OnePlus 9 is in fact water sealed.

This is in fact an approach taken by quite a number of phone manufacturers in recent years to reduce the cost.

Final Thoughts

In our opinion, the differences between the two devices are fairly negligible. We definitely do not see the need to upgrade beyond the OnePlus 9.

However, that’s just our opinion! If these slight tweaks are of value to you, by all means, go for it. Be sure to place your orders on May 18 to enjoy freebies!
