2024 has lifted off with a flying start with big smartphone players putting up their flagship line-ups so early in the year. Samsung, one of the giants of the industry, made plenty of headlines with the Galaxy S24 series not so much for its hardware, but for the arsenal of AI features integrated into the new devices.
We didn’t have to wait too long after that for the OnePlus 12 to launch with impressive top-end features and a price tag which many predict will carve out a sizable piece of the flagship market pie for OnePlus.

Price
Samsung S24 Ultra: The S24 Ultra retails at RM6,299 for the lowest 12GB+256GB variant, going up by RM500 to RM6,799 for the 12GB+512GB variant, with another steep RM1,000 increase to RM7,799 for the 12GB+1TB variant.
OnePlus 12: The OnePlus 12 on the other hand offers a single 16GB RAM and 512GB model for RM4,599. Bigger RAM, decent storage, and easier on the wallet; in terms of these alone, the OnePlus 12 makes a heavy claim as the best value for money purchase for a flagship device.
Processor
An area you won’t need to look at too intensely is the processor. Fittingly, both flagships utilize Qualcomm’s latest high-end processor, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.
Keep in mind other factors also play a role in performance, such as RAM. But if it ever comes down to which device holds the strongest processor, it’ll be an even game.
Displays
Samsung S24 Ultra: When it comes to displays, it’s a matter of curved versus flat. This year’s rendition of the S24 Ultra sees the displays go fully flat, eliminating even the very slight curvature that was on the S23 Ultra. It uses a 6.8″ LTPO AMOLED panel, with QHD+ (3120×1440) resolution, 120Hz maximum refresh rates, and 2,600nits peak brightness. New to the scene is the use of Corning Gorilla Armor, a protective coating believed to be the strongest Gorilla Glass ever produced.
OnePlus 12: Across the aisle, the OnePlus 12 maintains the curvature along the sides of its 6.82″ display. Other than that, it shares many similarities, including an LTPO AMOLED panel, a QHD+ (3168×1440) resolution, and 120Hz maximum refresh rates. It is the brighter device however, with peak brightness hitting 4,500nits. It also misses out on the Gorilla Armor, but is still as sturdy as most other flagships with a Glass Victus 2.
Cameras
Samsung S24 Ultra: One of the few power points of the Galaxy S series has always been the cameras. In terms of hardware, the S24 Ultra will continue to impress with its 200MP main camera. Samsung has upgraded the Periscope Telescope lens to 50MP (vs. 10MP on the S23 Ultra) and done away with the 10x optical zoom. Instead, it has replaced it with 5x optical zoom.
Hardware though, is just one side of the picture. Samsung has pumped plenty into AI this year, with one of its biggest implementations coming in the form of Generative Edits. This allows users to remove unwanted objects in a photo, expand or re-position a subject, and even have the borders of a cropped photo filled up – all in just a tap and drag system.
OnePlus 12: On the OnePlus 12, you’ll have a 50MP main camera, along with a 64MP Periscope Telescope with 3x optical zoom. On paper at least, the 48MP trumps that of Samsung’s 12MP ultra-wide. But as we all know, computational algorithm plays a huge role in photo quality, more so than the number of megapixels.
The OnePlus 12 has not yet integrated AI to the extent Samsung has.
Battery & Charging
Samsung S24 Ultra: The 5,000mAh battery on the S24 Ultra is pretty standard, especially at a flagship level. On the charging side of things though, there’s not much to be impressed about. A 45W wired charging is still a chink in the armor, especially when other brands have reached the heights of 67W – 90W. Wireless charging capability is present on the S24 Ultra, but keeps to only 15W.
OnePlus 12: As for the OnePlus 12, you’ll have plenty more juice with a 5,400mAh battery; with far better charging speeds with 100W wired charging and 50W wireless charging.
Other features
Samsung S24 Ultra: Smartphones are very much a personal affair these days, often coming down to usage and preference. The S24 Ultra is an excellent device for consistent note-taking and sketching, all thanks to the S-Pen that comes along with it.
Moreover, with Samsung’s new AI integration, it would be fair to say that it is now better than ever. Aside from the aforementioned Generative Edits, you’ll have a host of convenient features such as Circle to Search, Live Translate, Chat Assist, and Note Assist, to name a few. As to how much you integrate these into your lifestyle, that’s a question only you can answer.
OnePlus 12: One of the differentiating features of OnePlus phones is the alert slider; a toggle switch which allows you to flip between mute, vibrate, and ringer by sliding the switch on the side panels. This has been a hit with OnePlus fans, and a feature rarely seen on other flagships.
Software updates
Samsung S24 Ultra: This year, Samsung announced a whopping new update in terms of of software support. Samsung has committed 7 years of Android updates and 7 years of security patches for the Galaxy S24 Series, a much-welcomed extension compared to the 4 years Android updates and 5 years security updates in previous years.
OnePlus 12: OnePlus has not taken the same route, keeping to 4 years of Android updates and 5 years of security patches.
