Apple finally upgrades AirTag, now with louder speakers and longer range

Apple has officially introduced the next-generation AirTag, five years on from when it first debuted the tracker. The second-generation AirTag brings improved findability, a longer connectivity range and a significantly louder speaker to the wireless tracker. The new AirTag will be available in Malaysia soon, priced at RM129 for a single unit or RM429 for a four-pack, with free personalised engraving.
The new AirTag is powered by Apple’s second-generation Ultra Wideband (UWB) chip, the same one found in the iPhone 17 lineup, iPhone Air, Apple Watch Ultra 3 and Apple Watch Series 11. With this upgrade, Precision Finding now works up to 50% farther away compared to the previous generation.

Apple has also improved its Bluetooth connectivity, allowing users to locate their items from a greater distance. On top of that, Precision Finding is now supported on Apple Watch, letting users track down their AirTag directly from their wrist using Apple Watch Series 9 or later, or Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later.

Thanks to an updated internal design, the new AirTag features a speaker that is 50% louder than before. Apple says this allows users to hear the AirTag from twice the distance, making it easier to find items hidden under cushions, in bags, or around the house. The tracker also comes with a new, more distinctive chime.
The new AirTag also works seamlessly with Share Item Location, an iOS feature that allows users to temporarily share the location of a lost item with trusted third parties, including airlines. Apple has partnered with over 50 airlines, enabling customer service teams to help recover delayed or lost luggage more efficiently.

According to airline IT provider SITA, using Share Item Location has helped reduce baggage delays by 26% and cut cases of unrecoverable luggage by 90%. Shared access automatically expires after seven days or once the item is recovered, and can be disabled by the owner at any time.
From an environmental standpoint, the new AirTag uses 85% recycled plastic, 100% recycled rare earth elements in magnets and 100% recycled gold plating in Apple-designed circuit boards. Packaging is also fully fibre-based and recyclable.
The new AirTag retains the same design and is compatible with all existing AirTag accessories. Apple’s FineWoven Key Ring, made from 68% recycled content, is sold separately for RM179 and comes in five colours. Just for reference, the second generation AirTag will require an iPhone with iOS 26 or later, or iPad with iPadOS 26 or later, as well as an Apple Account with iCloud and Find My enabled.
