Netflix will no longer allow password-sharing in Malaysia

By Timothy Teoh May 25, 2023

Netflix has begun its crackdown on password-sharing in Malaysia, as confirmed by an official announcement posted on their newsroom.

In the announcement, it stated that those who are sharing their Netflix account with others outside their household will soon receive an email notifying users of the update. They stressed that “A Netflix account is for use by one household.”

Netflix also added that should they wish to share accounts with someone from a different household, they would have to do so by signing up for an Extra Member slot. This will cost an additional RM13 per month.

Those invited to be an Extra Member will have their own account and password, but their membership will be paid by the user who invited them.

As to how many Extra Members is permitted depends on your subscription plan. Those under the Standard plan can have one Extra Member, while those on the Premium plan can have up to two Extra Members.

Netflix has been trying to combat password-sharing for a long time, and it seems they’ve finally committed to a solution (much to our dismay).

The decision to curb password-sharing was previously only enforced in certain regions around Latin America. However, Netflix has now taken this to a global scale. Besides Malaysia, users from over 100 countries will also be affected by the crackdown.
