    Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 vs Galaxy Z Fold 5: What’s new?

By Timothy Teoh July 11, 2024

With the Galaxy Unpacked event wrapped up, we now have in the market Samsung’s latest foldable offering. The new Galaxy Z Fold 6 brings about a few notable tweaks in hardware as well as some neat features to Galaxy AI.

Before we dive in to the AI side of things, let’s take a look at how the Galaxy Z Fold 6 compares against last year’s Galaxy Z Fold 5.

The first glaring change we notice is, unfortunately, the exorbitant increase in base price. If you thought spending upwards of RM6K on a foldable is harsh, imagine forking out at least RM7,299 for the Galaxy Z Fold 6. What more if you aim for the top-most model which breaches the RM9K threshold. In other words, about the amount you would put down for a down payment of a new car.

Nevertheless, if you feel spending a grotesque amount for a foldable is up your alley, here’s what the Galaxy Z Fold 6 brings to the table.

    Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6

Like most of Samsung’s foldable innovations in the past, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 is lighter and slimmer than the previous generation. And by quite some difference too. In its folded form, the Z Fold 6 is only 12.1mm thin; and when unfolded, amounts to only 5.6mm. It’s not the lightest out there, as HONOR’s Magic V2 takes the throne with a less than 1mm form factor when folded.

They’ve also reduced the weight from 253g to 239g, which is pretty significant in terms of handling.

    Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5

On that note, the Galaxy Fold 6 now has a slightly boxier design with thinner bezels that leaves more room for the display. These are miniscule changes though, and you’d be hard-pressed in telling the difference if you didn’t have them side-by-side.

Displays are more or less maintained, with the major upgrade being its improved 2,600nits peak brightness of the internal screen.

An unsurprising direct upgrade is that the Z Fold 6 utilizes the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. And that it now finally has dust protection compared to last year’s iteration which only had an IPX8 rating.

Other than that, same cameras, same battery, same configurations, same design.

    Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6

What Samsung is harping mostly about though, is the Galaxy AI features. Samsung previewed a few new additions to what was released early this year on the S24 Series. These includes a new Interpreter mode which utilizes both the internal and external screen for two-way translation, a Circle to Search mode for mathematical problems, and a Sketch to image feature which transforms…well, sketches to images.

Some of these AI features will be included even on older models though, so they can’t really be counted as a Z Fold 6-exclusive.

If you do decide to spend that type of money, you at least have longevity on your side as Samsung has decided to give 7 years of Android and security update for the Z Fold 6.
