Micron and Crucial exit consumer RAM scene, to focus on AI business instead

If you’re looking to get a brand new gaming PC, you might want to hurry up on your purchase. That’s because Micron has announced that they’re ending the Crucial brand and exiting the consumer memory and SSD business altogether, as they look to align their business towards improving supply for ‘larger, strategic customers in faster growing segments’, which essentially is the AI industry.
With RAM prices continuing to go sky high, the removal of a major supplier will likely mean even higher prices for PC enthusiasts and gamers looking for their next rig. The surge in pricing is likely due to the AI industry swallowing up more and more of the limited memory supply for AI data centers, such as OpenAI which recently ordered 900,000 high-bandwidth DRAM memory chips per month from Samsung and SK Hynix.
Today, Micron shared some news that comes with a heavy heart: we’ve made the difficult decision to wind down the Crucial consumer business. This means that sales of Crucial-branded products through retailers, e-tailers, and distributors worldwide will gradually come to an end.… pic.twitter.com/KlW6B40BHO

“The AI-driven growth in the data center has led to a surge in demand for memory and storage. Micron has made the difficult decision to exit the Crucial consumer business in order to improve supply and support for our larger, strategic customers in faster-growing segments.
Thanks to a passionate community of consumers, the Crucial brand has become synonymous with technical leadership, quality and reliability of leading-edge memory and storage products.
We would like to thank our millions of customers, hundreds of partners and all of the Micron team members who have supported the Crucial journey for the last 29 years,” – Sumit Sadana, Micron Technology EVP and Chief Business Officer
As for now, Micron says that they’ll continue to ship Crucial consumer products till the end of February 2026. They will also work with their partners and customers during the transition phase and continue to provide warranty and support for their products. Micron-branded enterprise products however will continue to go on sale to their commercial channel customers globally. Furthermore, the company will be redeploying affected team members into existing open positions within Micron to reduce the impact on staff caused by this decision.
