MG Introduces Cyberster, A Cool New EV Roadster
MG or Morris Garages has a new EV Roadster aptly named the Cyberster. It features the signature scissor doors as envisioned by Carl Gotham and his MG London design team. It seems to borrow design cues from several iconic sports cars to form an elegant silhouette that should allow air to flow smoothly past it.
The fully electric fabric roof can be retracted in 15 seconds at speeds up to 48km/h. And to increase driving comfort while the roof is folded, MG installed specially designed wind deflectors positioned between the front seats to keep buffeting to a low level.
For the interior, the car gets a highly distinctive styling, which includes a multifunctional steering wheel and metal sports pedals. The leather-style seats are available in gray with white accents or black with red. Then there’s the wrap-around three-screen cockpit that consists of a 10.25-inch driver display that’s supported by a 7-inch display on either side.
There’s also a colour touchscreen display mounted in the centre console. It supports Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, 8-speaker Bose sound system, DAB and voice recognition as well as a 360-degree parking camera.
Performance
MG’s Cyberster comes in two variants, the Trophy, and the flagship tier GT. The former has a single motor rated at 340PS (250kW) that produces 475Nm of torque. This allows the rear-wheel-drive sports car to sprint from 0 to 100km/h in just 5 seconds.
The latter has a dual motor setup rated at 503PS(375kW) that produces 725Nm of torque. MG’s all-wheel-drive Cyberster GT can sprint from 0-100km/h in just 3.2 seconds. Despite the difference in power figures, both variants are equipped with four drive modes – Comfort, Custom, Sports and Track.
These four settings tune the Cyberster to offer a variation between comfort and performance characteristics. Typical of most modern sports cars, such drive settings tailor the vehicle’s behavior to suit the driver’s needs at a particular moment.
This way, it offers a smooth, leisurely cruise when traveling on a highway, but when needed, offers razor sharp acceleration and excellent handling.
The Cyberster is equipped with Brembo brakes and three-mode regenerative braking that helps top up battery power. The Trophy gets 19-inch alloy wheels while the GT gets 20-inch ones that are wrapped in Pirelli P Zero.
Range & Accessories
MG has given both the Trophy and GT a 77kWh battery, but the former offers a 509km range while the latter can travel 444km on a single charge. But what sets the two cars apart is that the GT gets a 6-way electrically adjustable heated seats with memory function and electric lumbar support.
Then there’s the distinctive heated steering wheel featuring 4-way adjustability twin paddles that help with kinetic regeneration. It also supports rapid DC charging up to 150kW enabling you to charge from 10% to 80% in just 38 minutes.
The Cyberster comes with MG Pilot that offers driver assistance features, which keep the vehicle in check and manage traffic conditions.
This includes Lane Change and Lane Keep Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, Blind Spot Detection, Active Emergency Braking with pedestrian and bicycle detection, Traffic Jam Assist, Intelligent Speed Assist, and Intelligent Headlight Control.
The MG Roadster has been introduced into the UK but there’s no word yet on if or when the car will make it to our shores.
