MediaTek Dimensity 7100: New midrange mobile SoC, to debut with Tecno Pova Curve 2?

MediaTek has a new system-on-chip in town: the Dimensity 7100. The naming scheme may be a little weird, and the specs included is a bit far off from bleeding edge, but it does appear to be a solid option for manufacturers building a budget-friendly midrange smartphone with 5G support.
The Dimensity 7100 sits above the recent Dimensity 7060 and below the Dimensity 7360 in MediaTek’s product stack. Fabbed on the 6nm process node—though no information on who’s fabbing it—the Dimensity 7100 features four Cortex-A78 cores clocked at 2.4GHz with four more Cortex-A55 cores clocked at 2.0GHz.
There’s an Arm Mali-G610 MC2 integrated GPU too to handle your games and graphics, with support for up to 2600 x 1200 displays at up to a 120Hz refresh rate. The Dimensity 7100 also features support for LPDDR5 and LPDDR4X memory on top of UFS 3.1 storage. MediaTek says that you can expect up to 8% better performance in games thanks to the GPU.
Elsewhere, the Dimensity 7100 can handle imaging sensors up to 200MP with 10-bit colour depth and full HDR. There’s support for 5G up to 3.3Gbps speeds too, on top of WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.4 connectivity.
While the Dimensity 7100 clearly won’t be powering the next flagship, where the Dimensity 7100 shines is in power efficiency. MediaTek claims power efficiency upgrades of up to 23% more modem efficiency, up to 16% more efficient during media playback and up to 5% more efficient during app usage.
As for where it’ll be used, MediaTek didn’t state anything just yet though we do have some guesses. The upcoming Tecno Pova Curve 2 has already been leaked a couple of times, and it seems that it will almost certainly be using the Dimensity 7100 under the hood. The Pova Curve 2 is also slated to get a curved AMOLED display pushing a 144Hz refresh rate with an 8,000mAh battery keeping the lights on. It’s still unclear when it’ll launch though, so there’s a chance another device may soon debut with the Dimensity 7100.
