MCMC Removes Over 32,000 Scam-related Content in First Four Months of 2025

Between January and April 2025, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) removed 32,436 pieces of scam-related content from various online platforms. This figure represents nearly half of the 63,562 scam content takedowns recorded throughout 2024.
Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching highlighted the urgency of the situation, noting the rising number of incidents and their financial impact. “In just four months, we’ve already taken down almost half the amount we removed last year. This matter is of deep concern to us,” she said.

Citing figures from the police Teo said that RM799 million had been lost to online scams during the same four-month period. A significant number of these cases involved fake investment schemes, which continue to be a major concern for authorities.
To address the issue beyond enforcement, MCMC has launched Kempen Internet Selamat (KIS) and introduced cyber awareness programmes in schools. Currently, nine schools have participated in the programme, with plans underway to expand the initiative to universities.

Scams are noticeably on the rise in the country. According to Whoscall’s 2024 Annual Report, scam calls in Malaysia skyrocketed to 2.98 million in 2024, marking an 82.81% increase compared to the previous year. Moreover, scam tactics involving the use of AI are emerging. In March, the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) identified five deepfake videos of high-profile politicians being used to promote fake investment schemes.
