Maxis to expand fibre network infrastructure in Penang

Maxis’s fibre network is set to make headway into Penang as the telco begins deploying fibre infrastructure in the state. The expansion was officiated on 2 May 2025 in the presence of Tuan Chow Kon Yeow, the Chief Minister of Penang, and Goh Seow Eng, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Maxis.
According to Maxis, its fibre network will span all districts in Penang – including both the mainland and island – with emphasis on high-demand urban areas such as Jelutong, Georgetown, Batu Maung, Bayan Lepas, and Bayan Baru. Maxis hopes to connect over 100,000 homes in the state by 2027.

Maxis’ expansion of its fibre network into Penang is in line with the state’s Penang2030 vision, which aims to foster a family-focused, green, and smart state. The deployment was facilitated by the Penang State Government’s Last Mile Connectivity Guidelines, which enable telecommunication providers to seamless deploy fibre networks more quickly and effectively.
“The Penang State Government welcomes Maxis’ fibre expansion initiative, which is aligned with our Penang2030 vision to build a smart, green and inclusive state. High-quality internet connectivity is a critical driver for education, talent development and economic growth, all of which will further solidify Penang’s position as a regional hub for technology and innovation,” said YAB Tuan Chow Kon Yeow.
