MacBook Neo: Apple’s cheapest laptop is also one of the most repairable MacBooks ever

Apple’s new MacBook Neo laptop may be its most repairable MacBook in about 14 years. According to a teardown by iFixit, the device introduces several design changes that make common repairs significantly easier than on previous models.

Opening the Neo still requires removing eight pentalobe screws, but the bottom cover can then be unclipped by hand without heat or specialised tools. Inside, the layout is unusually straightforward for a MacBook. Key components like the battery connector, speakers, USB-C ports and trackpad are easily accessible, creating a flatter disassembly structure with fewer parts blocking others.

One major improvement is the lack of parts pairing issues when using original components. In the past, Apple devices often locked hardware parts to a specific device, triggering warnings or disabling features after replacements. With Apple’s Repair Assistant tool, introduced after right-to-repair legislation in Oregon in 2024, the MacBook Neo accepts replacement displays, batteries and iFixit even swapped Touch ID modules without issue. Activation Lock tied to iCloud accounts still affects refurbishers, but software restrictions on OEM repairs appear largely resolved.

The biggest hardware change is the battery design. Older MacBooks typically use glued battery packs secured with stretch-release adhesive strips that can break during removal. The MacBook Neo instead uses a battery mounted on a tray held down by 18 screws, allowing it to be removed normally. The tray likely also reinforces the chassis beneath the keyboard. The change also aligns with upcoming EU rules requiring user-replaceable batteries in portable electronics by 2027.

Keyboard replacement however isn’t easy, requiring removal of 41 screws along with tape and adhesive. That being said, it is still easier than before since whoever’s repairing it won’t need to deal with a glued battery in the first hurdle. Apple has also published official keyboard repair manuals, suggesting replacement parts may be offered through its Self Service Repair programme.

Several components on the MacBook Neo are modular too, including the USB-C ports and the 3.5mm headphone jack, meaning damaged ports can be replaced without touching the logic board. The display is also easier to remove thanks to a simplified antenna assembly. The laptop also drops Apple’s Force Touch trackpad in favour of a simpler mechanical design, which is easier to repair and cheaper to produce.

Overall, iFixit rates the MacBook Neo a 6 out of 10 for repairability, which isn’t great but is quite good when it comes to Cupertino. Yes, the soldered memory and storage will be a problem for users down the line, and the pentalobe screws remain an unnecessary hassle, but there’s a lot of good design choices here still. The battery not being glued, modular ports, a sensible layout and even manuals for it being available from Apple on day one all helped to make the MacBook Neo the most repairable laptop from Apple in over a decade.
