JPN Offers Free MyKad Chip Replacements from 23 Sept to 7 Oct 2025

By Timothy Teoh September 23, 2025

In line with the recent BUDI95 initiative, which requires MyKad verification for Malaysians to enjoy subsidized RON95 petroleum, the National Registration Department (JPN) is now offering free replacement for damaged MyKad chips from 23 September to 7 October 2025.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail stated in a media release that the service will be available at any of the 210 JPN counters and offices nationwide. He added that the government will cover the full cost of MyKad chip replacements during the specified period, which is expected to cost the government approximately RM714,660.

However, please note that the service is only available for those whose MyKad has a damaged or faulty chip. MyKad replacement for other reasons — such as lost cards, physical defects that do not affect the chip, or to update MyKad information — will still require payment at the usual rate.

JPN has seen a spike in MyKad replacement applications under the “spoiled chip or card” category in recent months. A total of 32,819 applications were made in June, rising to 40,371 in July, and again spiking to 45,411 in August. In just the first 21 days of September, 22,858 applications were received.

This averages out to about 43,000 chip replacement applications per month.

The MyKad is also used to verify Malaysians eligible for the RM100 SARA aid. If you have used it to claim the aid before, it means your chip is still functioning properly.

According to JPN, some telltale signs of a defective MyKad include:

  • your MyKad cannot be scanned at machines or self-service kiosks
  • banks or government agencies cannot detect your card’s data
  • you find yourself repeatedly needing to rescan your MyKad (a sign of a deteriorating chip)
  • your MyKad is scratched, cracked, or bent (physical damage that could affect the chip)
  • your MyKad is more than 10 years old (increased risk of wear and tear on the chip)
