iPhone SE (2022) vs iPhone SE (2020): What’s Different?

May 27, 2022

Apple’s newest budget phone in 2022, the iPhone SE (2022), is finally here. While it might look similar to the iPhone SE (2020), the latest model comes with Apple’s A15 Bionic chip, a bigger battery and 5G connectivity sold at an affordable price.

If you’re wondering if you should make the switch to the iPhone SE (2022), read on to learn more.

iPhone SE (2022) vs iPhone SE (2020): Design and Display

When comparing both old and new models, it will be difficult to tell them apart. They both feature a glass back, a stainless steel frame and a Touch ID home button. The 2022 model, however, is water and dust resistant and more durable with tougher glass for protection.

As for the display, both phones have a 4.7-inch Liquid Retina Display with 1334 x 750 resolution and a 60Hz refresh rate. Furthermore, its True Tone screen adjusts the brightness and colour according to your surroundings for an optimal viewing experience.

iPhone SE (2022) vs iPhone SE (2020): Cameras

Both phones have a single 12MP wide sensor camera with optical image stabilisation at the back. At the front, there is a 7MP camera for selfies, and both cameras can shoot videos at 4K and 60fps. However, while sharing similar camera setups, Apple’s software plays a significant role here.

With the latest A15 Bionic chip, the iPhone SE (2022) has many new features for taking great photos, like Photographic Styles, Deep Fusion, Smart HDR4 and an improved Portrait Mode. You can also take better videos, especially in low lighting.

iPhone SE (2022) vs iPhone SE (2020): Performance

Both iPhones come with 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB storage options, but if there is one area Apple has brought a significant change to, it’s the phone’s performance.

The A15 Bionic chip in the 2022 model is a significant step up. Powered by a 6-core CPU with two high-performance cores and four high-efficiency cores, the latest iPhone SE model is much faster than the A13 Bionic chip in the iPhone SE (2020).

The iPhone SE (2022) also comes with an additional 4-core GPU and a 16-core Neural Engine. These enable faster machine learning for activities like Live Text in Camera and on-device Siri and dictation.

iPhone SE (2022) vs iPhone SE (2020): Battery

Both the iPhones support 18W fast charging and Qi wireless charging. However, many were not satisfied with the iPhone SE (2020)’s battery capacity. Its 1,821 mAh battery only allowed around eight hours of life when streaming videos.

The iPhone SE (2022), however, has been upgraded for better battery life. With the A15 Bionic chip, an enhanced battery and iOS to boost battery life, users can now load apps in a flash and enjoy up to 15 hours of video playback.

iPhone SE (2022) vs iPhone SE (2020): Software

The iPhone SE (2022) comes with iOS 15, Apple’s latest software. This update comes with new features that help you connect with others and do more with on-device intelligence.

Unlock your phone while wearing a mask or stay in touch with loved ones with new updates to FaceTime and Messages. Travel better with upgrades to Maps and Wallet and enjoy more privacy with iCloud+. Unlike the iPhone SE (2020), the 2022 model lets you do so much more.

Furthermore, both models come with one year of limited warranty. However, in terms of future-proofing, the iPhone SE (2022) will probably receive five to six more years of OS updates compared to the older 2020 model.

iPhone SE (2022) vs iPhone SE (2020): 5G

One of the biggest reasons for getting the iPhone SE (2022) is 5G connectivity, which means faster downloads and fewer gaming delays. While only the sub-6GHz 5G (and C-Band) is supported, it is still better in terms of speed over 4G.

Editor’s Note

While not much has been changed design-wise, the iPhone SE (2022) comes with many other upgrades. With improved camera features, hardware and an A15 Bionic chip that promises longer battery life and supports 5G connectivity, the iPhone SE (2022) is an excellent upgrade from an older iPhone model.
