iPhone 17e: Same RM2,999 price, now with MagSafe, Apple A19 and more storage

Apple has announced their new budget iPhone: the iPhone 17e. This essentially replaces the previous iPhone 16e as the cheapest entryway into the iOS ecosystem, and not only does it retain the same price, but also gets a number of upgrades under the hood.

Apple iPhone 17e Malaysia pricing and availability

The iPhone 17e will start at RM2,999 for the base model with 256GB of storage, rising to RM3,999 for 512GB of storage. Available in Soft Pink, White, and Black colour options, you will be able to pre-order one starting from 4 March, 10:15pm. It’s worth pointing out that while it has the same RM2,999 starting price as the iPhone 16e, you will be getting 256GB of storage here rather than the 128GB that the base model iPhone 16e came with.

If you’re looking to get some accessories along with your new iPhone 17e, the iPhone 17e Silicone Case with MagSafe and the iPhone 17e Clear Case with MagSafe will both be available for RM239.

Apple iPhone 17e specs

The iPhone 17e retains the same aluminum body and design as its predecessor, housing a 6.1-inch, Super Retina XDR OLED display pushing a 2532 x 1170p resolution, with a peak 1,200nits HDR brightness and P3 colour. You will however find a layer of Ceramic Shield 2 over the screen, for 3x better scratch resistance than the 16e. There’s no ProMotion display here again though, so you’ll have to make the jump to the regular iPhone 17 for that. It’s also a little heavier now at 170g vs 167g on the iPhone 16e.

The main change here is that the iPhone 17e has been refreshed with the Apple A19 chip, which will be twice as powerful than those on something aging like the iPhone 11. The iPhone 17e also features the C1X mobile modem, which Cupertino claims is 2x faster than the C1 in the iPhone 16e, while using 30% less power than the iPhone 16 Pro’s modem.

Another nice upgrade here is that the iPhone 17e now gets MagSafe, a feature many lamented was missing from the 16e. That’s on top of Qi2 wireless charging support too for 15W wireless charging rather than just 7.5W on the iPhone 16e. The battery life itself however sees no change, with Apple rating it as good for up to 26 hours of video playback.

As for cameras, the iPhone 17e is largely unchanged with its single 48MP Fusion main camera on the back and the 12MP TrueDepth front camera, now improved with next-gen Focus and Depth Control. Other features of note include an IP68 dust and water resistance rating, Face ID, an action button on the side and support for Apple Intelligence.
