iPhone Trade-In at Machines: What to Know Before Swapping for the iPhone 17

By Timothy Teoh September 19, 2025

As proud Malaysians, we’re happy to announce that the iPhone 17 has officially landed on our shores – making us one of the first countries in Asia to get our hands on Apple’s latest flagships.

You’ll find the iPhone 17 series at the Apple Store @ The Exchange TRX, as well as at a host of Apple Authorized Dealers across Malaysia, including Machines.

We also know that many of you will be looking to upgrade your devices via trade-in to offset the cost of your shiny new iPhones. If that’s the case, you’ll be glad to know that Machines offers trade-in programs, with values of up to RM4,400 if you’re upgrading from the iPhone 16 Pro Max. Of course, the value will depend on how well your device has been taken care of.

BUT before you head over to the nearest Machines outlet, you’ll want to make sure your device is fully ready for a seamless hand-in. After speaking with a Machines retail specialist, we found that the trade-in process is very similar to trading at the Apple Store.

Machines iPhone Trade-in Process

Simply put, you hand in your iPhone, a specialist inspects your device, and then assigns a value based on your device’s model and condition.

However, at Machines, as highlighted prominently by the specialist, there are a few things to keep in mind in order to make the process smoother.

Firstly, you MUST back up your phone before arriving at the store. Based on Apple’s website, you can back up your iPhone in various ways, including iCloud, Mac, or PC. However, in this case, it’s recommended to back up via iCloud, as it makes the restoring process easier.

Once your iPhone is backed up, you can take it to the specialist, who will inspect your phone for display cracks, battery health, and its overall condition, before assigning a value.

Do take note that at Machines, the trade-in value works as instant credit that will immediately go toward your purchase – which must be made on the same receipt. This means you need to be sure of the device you want beforehand, as the value of your traded-in device will be deducted from the original price of your new device. You cannot opt for a bank transfer or receive the value in cash, nor can you save the credits and return in the future to claim them. It MUST be used on the same receipt.

Once you’ve made your purchase, the specialist will proceed to help you restore your data – if you wish.

Here’s where the specialist clarifies: backing up your iPhone on iCloud will only back up your internal data not data from your apps. So, your photos, contacts, and other files should transfer seamlessly to your new device. Your apps will be re-downloaded, but you’ll need to go through the process of logging in again, and may lose some data depending on whether the app has its own cloud backup.

For example, your WhatsApp chats, if backed up correctly via email, should be restored from where you left off once you log in with your phone number. Other apps, like games you’ve been playing on guest mode (without registering an account), will be wiped.

So, aside from backing up your internal data on iCloud, make sure you also back up your favorite apps to their respective registered accounts.

Other than that, you should be good to go to trade in your iPhones at Machines! Rather than heading to the store and getting bombarded with unfamiliar processes, this guide will help you navigate the experience and make your trade-in at Machines effortless.
