iPhone 17 Pro & 17 Pro Max: Bold Redesign, Vapor Chamber, and More; From RM5,499 in Malaysia

Apple has wrapped up its latest ‘Awe Dropping’ event, where the tech giant unveiled the iPhone 17 series. This marks one of Apple’s most significant overhauls in recent years, with the lineup consisting of the upgraded iPhone 17, an all-new iPhone Air, and refreshed designs for the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max models.
Regarding the refreshed aesthetics of the latter models, the Pro and Pro Max variants sport a redesign, consistent with leaks leading up to the event. Specifically, they now feature what Apple calls a ‘plateau’ at the top section of the rear panel, which houses the camera array.

The plateau is the result of a major interior rearrangement, which includes the introduction of a vapor chamber for the first time in an iPhone. Apple’s approach to its new thermal management system involves the use of de-ionized water sealed in a vapor chamber, welded into the aluminum chassis. Simply put, it allows heat to be efficiently dissipated through the system, leading to better cooling.

Plateau aside, another aesthetic leap by Apple is the introduction of a Cosmic Orange colorway, the first of its kind in Apple’s iPhone portfolio. If that doesn’t suit your taste, the phones will also be available in White and Deep Blue options.

In terms of performance, the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max are powered by the latest A19 Pro chip, featuring 6 CPU cores and 6 GPU cores, integrated with neural accelerators for enhanced AI performance.
Standardization is maintained across the series, with the Pro model featuring a smaller 6.3″ display compared to the 6.9″ display on the Pro Max. Both displays are Super Retina XDR and are protected by Apple’s latest Ceramic Shield 2. Interestingly, the rear panels also come with Ceramic Shield protection, which Apple claims makes them 4x more resistant to cracks.

By virtue of its size, the larger Pro Max model offers a longer-lasting battery, with Apple claiming up to 37 hours of video playback (up from 33 hours on the 16 Pro Max). The Pro model, on the other hand, offers a solid 31 hours of video playback (up from 27 hours on the 16 Pro).
What the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max continue to share is their camera array. Apple has equipped both Pro models with triple 48MP cameras this time around, including the main Fusion Main, Fusion Ultra-wide, and Fusion Telephoto lenses. Additionally, the front camera has been upgraded to a new 18MP Centre Stage camera.

Video capabilities also see an upgrade, with the Pro models now able to shoot in ProRes RAW format, offering greater post-production flexibility.
