Features
In terms of features, the iPad Pro 2021 does offer 5G cellular support and built-in storage of up to 2TB. Aside from that, the pro microphone, ProMotion as well as built-in speakers are pretty similar to its predecessors.
In our opinion, the 3 main upgrades everyone can look forward to are as follow:
1. M1 Processor
For those who are unfamiliar, the M1 chipset is an octa-core 2.1 – 3.2 GHz processor which is currently used to power the Macbook Air 2020.
That’s right! Apple has taken a laptop processor to power its latest iPad Pro. For comparison, the Apple M1 outperforms the A12Z Bionic in both single and multi-core performance.
With the M1 Processor and GPU, the iPad Pro 2021 is now a portable powerhouse for gaming, video editing and even 3D rendering works.
2. Liquid Retina XDR Display
iPad Pro 11″ Liquid Retina Display | iPad Pro 12.9″ Liquid Retina XDR Display |
2388×1668 resolution, 3.98 million pixels | 2732×2048 resolution, 5.6 million pixels |
P3 wide colour | P3 wide colour |
True Tone for comfortable viewing | True Tone for comfortable viewing |
ProMotion adaptive refresh rate | ProMotion adaptive refresh rate |
Anti-reflective coating | Anti-reflective coating |
600 nits max brightness | 1,600 nits peak brightness (HDR) |
– | 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio |
With a powerful M1 processor, it is crucial that the display is not lacking. The Liquid Retina XDR Display available on the iPad Pro 12.9″ (2021) offers almost double the pixel resolution and nearly triple the peak brightness.
This is especially important for those who will be doing heavy video or visual editing on the device. When it comes to detailed work like colour grading, it is important that the display is able to portray the output accurately.
3. Center Stage
Center Stage is a feature that uses the camera’s 122-degree field of view, along with the machine learning capabilities provided by the M1 chip, to recognize people in the frame and keep them in view.
The tracking works even if the subject is moving around during the video. Furthermore, it is capable of tracking multiple subjects and pan out the video accordingly to keep all subjects in view.
Final Thoughts
In case you are wondering, the iPad Pro will come complete with a USB-C cable and a 20W USB-C Power adapter. Overall, we really like the direction Apple has taken to upgrade the iPad with an M1 processor.
With this boost in performance, we do expect more people to opt for the iPad Pro 2021 over the Macbook Air 2020. Thanks to its portability, apple pen support and cellular connectivity, the iPad Pro 2021 does seem like the smarter choice.
