Intel pledges RM860 million investment into Malaysia as their CEO meets PM

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced that Intel is pledging an RM860 million investment as part of their plan to make Malaysia its assembly and test operations hub. This comes following a meeting between the Prime Minister and Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan.

Tan, who was born in Muar, Johor, met with Anwar yesterday during which they discussed the development of the semiconductor sector in Malaysia as well as efforts to further strengthen the country’s position has a high-quality investment destination. Anwar added that based on confidence in the country’s long-term plans such as the New Industrial Master Plan 2030, Intel will not only invest in Malaysia but also expressed its appreciation for the continued support of the Malaysian government towards the Intel Malaysia Assembly and Test facility.

The Prime Minister also welcomed Intel’s support and work with educational and training institutes via elective subjects as well as research and development projects, which garnered a funding commitment of RM2.8 million over two years. Anwar added that these investments reflect the confidence of a global company towards Malaysia, signalling our status as a key partner in driving innovation, strengthening our local talent ecosystem and maintaining the country’s competitive edge on the world stage.

Intel first set up shop in Malaysia way back in 1972, with their facility in Penang also being their first ever international manufacturing plant. The semiconductor giant now has two major facilities on our shores, a wafer die sort and die preparation facility in Kulim, Kedah as well as the Intel Penang Assembly and Test facility. Intel Malaysia is also home to their System Integration and Manufacturing Services, which designs and manufactures specialised equipment that their operations may require.
