HONOR releases Magic5 Pro and Magic5 with speedier photo-taking capabilities

February 28, 2023

HONOR has revealed their latest additions to the Magic series with the Magic5 Pro and Magic5. The reveal was in conjunction with the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona last night.

The Magic5 series improves in a number of ways from last year’s Magic4 series, including speedier photo-taking, enhanced eye comfort technology, and larger battery capacity.

Let’s take a quick breakdown of what you can pull out of the hat with the Magic5 Series.

HONOR Magic5 Pro

During the launch, HONOR introduced 5 colour choices available with the Magic 5 Pro: Glacier Blue, Meadow Green, Coral Purple, Orange, and Black. However, it seems us Malaysians may be restricted on this end as HONOR Malaysia’s website only markets Meadow Green and Black.

In terms of display, the Magic5 Pro now sports a 6.81-inch OLED screen with a slight rise in what HONOR coins a Quad-Curved Floating Screen. You’ll have a 2848×1312 resolution and a 1-120Hz Adaptive Dynamic Refresh Rate.

The HONOR Magic5 Pro hits a peak brightness of 1800nits, topping even the Galaxy S23 Ultra which only achieves 1750nits.

The display now also boasts a Super Dynamic Vivid Display that makes colours more vibrant and immersive.

The Magic5 Pro has a host of features catered to protecting your eyes. One such feature is the Circadian Night Display which claims to adjust the colour temperature of the display to match the secretion of melatonin in the human body. This supposedly reduces impact on sleep so you can keep to your sleeping schedule.

In addition to that, you’ll also have the benefit of a 2160Hz Pulse-width Modulation (PWM) dimming.

Moving on to the cameras. On first look at the spec sheet, the Magic5 Pro doesn’t seem to improve much from the Magic4 Pro. That’s because most of its enhancements were made in the software algorithm rather than the hardware.

HONOR improved on its Falcon Camera algorithm that now optimizes focus and shutter speed. As such, the Magic5 Pro now takes photos at a speedier rate. What’s more, HONOR has added on an AI Motion Sensing technology that captures photos at its most critical moments, such as when you attempt one of those touristy jump shots.

Hardware wise, you’ll get a 50MP wide main camera with a 1/1.12-inch sensor with OIS, a 50MP ultra wide camera with 122 degree FOV, and a 50MP Periscope Telescope camera with 3.5x optical zoom, 100x digital zoom, and OIS. The Telephoto camera also supports 30cm macro photography.

As for the front camera, you’ll get a 12MP ultra wide camera with 100 degree FOV. There’s also a 3D Depth Camera for facial recognition.

The HONOR Magic5 Pro runs on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Processor fitting for a flagship smartphone. You’ll have an improved 5,100mAh battery compared to the 4,600mAh battery on the Magic4 Pro. Although you will compromise slightly with a 66W SuperCharge inferior to its predecessor’s 100W SuperCharge. 50W wireless SuperCharge is available.

All this is protected under an industry-leading IP68 dust- and waterproof rating.

HONOR Magic5

Thankfully, the HONOR Magic5 keeps much of its key features of the Magic5 Pro.

You will get the same eye comfort technology with Circadian Night Display, Dynamic Dimming, and 2160Hz high-frequency PWM Dimming.

The display size is only slightly smaller at 6.73-inch and packs a 2688x1224px resolution, but it retains the Quad-Curved Floating Display and Super Dynamic Vivid Display. You’ll still have 120Hz refresh rate but without the adaptive features, and there is a reduce in peak brightness which only goes up to 1,600nits.

The triple camera system also differs to a small degree. The main camera is a 54MP wide camera with a 1/1.49-inch sensor, unfortunately with no OIS. This is flanked by an ultra wide camera with 122 degree FOV and a 32MP Telephoto Camera with 2.5x optical zoom, 50x digital zoom, with OIS.

The HONOR Magic5 will have the improved Falcon Camera algorithm and AI Motion Sensing technology.

At the front you’ll have a 12MP 100-degree wide-angle selfie camera.

The HONOR Magic5 does not compromise in the processor and battery departments. You’ll still have the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip, and a 5,100mAh battery with 66W SuperCharge. There is no wireless charging on the HONOR Magic5.

The HONOR Magic5 will come in Glacier Blue and Black.

Pricing

The HONOR Magic5 Pro (12+512GB) will be priced at €1,199, about RM5,694, while the HONOR Magic5 (8+256GB) will be priced at €899, about RM4,269. Keep in mind prices in Malaysian Ringgit are not final, and you can expect more details to come in soon.
