HMD Unveils Game-Changing Skyline and Pulse Smartphones in Malaysia

By Timothy Teoh September 3, 2024

In Kuala Lumpur on August 27, 2024, HMD Global, the company behind Nokia phones, introduced two new smartphone series to the Malaysian market: the HMD Skyline and Pulse. These devices are crafted with a focus on sustainability, repairability, and modern features, addressing the key demands of today’s tech-savvy users.

HMD Pulse Series: Aiming for Easier Repairs

The Pulse series, which includes the Pulse Pro, Pulse+, and Pulse, focuses on making it easier for you to repair your phone at home. With what HMD calls “Gen 1 repairability,” you can handle common fixes like screen and battery replacements yourself, using kits made in partnership with iFixit.

This shift towards easier repairs is part of a broader move to reduce electronic waste and give you more control over how long your device lasts. If you’re someone who values keeping your tech in good shape for longer, this series might be worth considering.

HMD Skyline: Entering the 5G Market

The Skyline series, expected to launch in Malaysia in September 2024, is HMD’s first foray into 5G. These phones are designed with a modern audience in mind, featuring a 50MP front camera with autofocus and eye-tracking, plus a “selfie gesture” that lets you snap a picture with a simple hand movement.

The rear camera setup includes a 108MP Hybrid OIS triple system, offering various photography modes enhanced by AI. The Skyline also promises up to 48 hours of battery life and supports Qi2 magnetic charging, which could be useful if you’re always on the go.

One feature that might catch your eye is the new Detox Mode, an app aimed at helping you manage your screen time and maintain a healthier balance between digital and real life.

HMD’s Approach in Malaysia

HMD’s introduction of the Skyline and Pulse series in Malaysia is part of a broader strategy to expand its offerings. They’re continuing their work with Nokia while also developing their own line of HMD-branded devices. In Malaysia, Zitron Fulfilment Sdn Bhd has been named the authorized distributor for these new phones.

The Pulse Pro, with 8+8GB RAM and 256GB of storage, will be available from August 30, 2024, priced at RM739 in Black and Purple, which places it in a competitive spot within the mid-range market.
