Here’s your first look at the ASUS ROG Phone 9
In case you missed it, ASUS Malaysia has officially confirmed that the ROG Phone 9 Series will launch in the country imminently. The new generation of ROG Phones will succeed the ROG Phone 8 Series, which was unveiled early in the year.
The latest iteration sports notable design changes to the standard variant, along with key upgrades to the series overall. When the time comes, we will extensively review the ROG Phone 9. For the time being, here are our first impressions of ROG’s latest gaming smartphone.
ASUS ROG Phone 9: First impressions in Malaysia
Remember the AniMe Vision display that was exclusive to the ROG Phone 8 Pro? That’s now on both models of the ROG Phone 9 Series. Previously, the base ROG Phone 8 had to make do with the Fearless Eye logo, which did nothing other than flaunt its RGB colours.
Now, ASUS has done away with the Aura RGB completely and replaced it with the far more functional and customizable AniMe Vision, albeit with only 85 programmable mini-LEDs. In comparison, the ROG Phone 9 Pro has 648, nearly double the 341 mini-LEDs on its predecessor.
We’re also thrilled to say that the ROG Phone 9 Series will boast the Snapdragon 8 Elite Mobile Platform, making them one of the first smartphones in Malaysia to do so. This is THE flagship Qualcomm processor you’ll find on leading Android phones moving forward, succeeding the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.
Displays, on the other hand, remain unchanged from the previous generation. That is, you’ll still get a 6.78″ E6 AMOLED display with 2400×1080 resolution and Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection. One upgrade though, is the ability to boost refresh rates to 185Hz. However, this setting can only be enabled through Game Genie, which makes it exclusive to games only. For normal scrolling, there’s still the super responsive 165Hz which you’ll have no problems with.
One upgrade we greatly welcome is the larger 5,800mAh battery. There was some outcry when the ROG Phone 8 Series was revealed to have only a 5,500mAh battery, down from the 6,000mAh of the ROG 7 Series. This reduction was ultimately the result of a slimmed down form factor. Now, it seems ASUS is looking to rectify that.
There’s still a whole lot more to touch on, including a host of ROG-developed AI features and the GameCool 9 cooling system. Not to mention, the main camera shifting from the Sony IMX890 sensor to the LYTIA 700.
We’ll go in-depth into all of these and more in our official review, which will be out not long after the official launch. For now though, keep your eyes and ears open, as the ROG Phone 9 will be coming soon to Malaysia.
