Pixel 6A Gets a Little Too Hot to Handle — Google Issues Safety Update

The Google Pixel 6A is making headlines again, but this time not for its budget-friendly performance. The phone, which launched in July 2022, is reportedly overheating — and in rare cases, catching fire. Literally.
Android Authority spotted two separate cases of the Pixel 6A going up in flames, including one user who claimed their phone “spontaneously combusted in the middle of the night.” Another similar incident was reported just a month later in June.

In response, Google is rolling out a mandatory software update aimed at cooling things down. The update will introduce battery management features that kick in once the device hits 400 charge cycles, reducing battery capacity and charging performance to lower the risk of overheating.
“A subset of Pixel 6a phones will require a mandatory software update to reduce the risk of potential battery overheating,” a Google spokesperson told Android Authority. “We’ll contact impacted customers next month, with all the information they need to address the issue.”

The Pixel 6A was never officially launched in Malaysia but can still be found through online retailers and import channels. Google has not announced a recall, but affected users should keep an eye out for email updates starting next month. If you own a Pixel 6A, now might be a good time to check your battery health — and maybe not leave it charging overnight.
