Google finally lets users change their embarrassing Gmail usernames

By Raymond Saw April 1, 2026

If you made your Gmail account when you were still in primary school, you probably have an embarrassing email address that adult you might not want on official documents anymore. Thankfully, Google is finally allowing users to change their username (the part of the email address before @gmail.com).

To do so, you’ll have to first open your Gmail app and click on your profile. There, you can select Manage your Google Account followed by Personal Info. You’ll then see an Email category with an option to Change Google Account email. Once you’ve changed your email’s username, your old email address will remain part of your account as an alternate address, allowing you to still receive any emails you may get.

There are a couple of caveats though. For starters, you can only use this option once every 12 months, and you can’t use that new username for any new Google Account signups in the future. And while your old email still exists and can be used to login to any other apps and websites, you will need to manually them elsewhere if you rather they just use your new email address instead.

Unfortunately for the ‘x69xMuhdxCR7xChanx69x@gmail.com‘ Gmail users in Malaysia, the feature is currently open for US residents only at time of writing. However, you can probably expect them to roll out the feature for global users later this year so stay tuned for that.
