Google enables Gemini for Education across all 20 Malaysian public universities

By Raymond Saw March 10, 2026

Google Malaysia has announced that they’ve enabled Gemini for Education for all 20 public universities in the country. This covers both the academic and administrative systems in the 20 institutes of higher learning, providing AI-powered tools to almost 600,000 students and 75,000 faculty members.

As part of the initiative, the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia has equipped 40,000 faculty members with Google AI Pro for Education, granting expanded access to Google’s advanced AI models. Meanwhile, 128,000 students have been provided with NotebookLM Enterprise to help enhance research workflows and academic writing.

This nationwide effort aligns with Malaysia’s ambition to become an AI-driven nation by 2030, integrating artificial intelligence directly into the country’s higher education ecosystem.

With the rollout, university students and lecturers now gain access to Gemini 3.1 Pro, Google’s latest reasoning model. The system is integrated with LearnLM, a set of AI models designed specifically to support learning and teaching. The rollout is integrated into the universities’ existing Google Workspace for Education environment, allowing the academic community to access secure AI assistance for research, teaching, and learning.

Among the key features available is Guided Learning, which functions as a collaborative thinking partner that encourages students to build deeper understanding rather than simply generating quick answers. Another feature, Deep Research, acts as a personal research assistant capable of analysing sources and helping organise complex academic information.

Beyond providing access to AI tools, the initiative also includes training programmes aimed at improving AI literacy among students and academic staff. These programmes include Gemilang, the Google Skills Platform, free Google AI courses, Gemini Certification for University Students and the Google Career Launchpad.
