Garmin’s Arm-Worn Sleep Monitor Is a Clever Alternative to Rings and Smartwatches

Sleep tracking technology has hit another milestone after Garmin released its Index Sleep Monitor. This is a sleep tracker that could be a worthy alternative to users who find smart watches and even smart rings too intrusive.

The Index Sleep Monitor is essentially a cuff that wraps around the wearer’s upper arm, something like those you see on blood pressure machines except without the wires. According to Garmin, the cuff is made of 70% nylon and 30% spandex, which makes it lightweight and breathable.

Strapped inside the cuff is a removable puck which houses the sleep tracking sensors. When worn through the night, the sensors will collect sleep data, including sleep stages, heart rate variability (HRV), and breathing variations. For women, the device will even monitor skin temeprature to give insights into mentrual health, such as period predictions and past ovulation estimates.

Since there isn’t a screen on the cuff, wearers will get a comprehensive view of their sleep in the Garmin Connect app. These stats can also sync to Garmin smartwatches, so wearers can analyze their stats on the smartwatch as well.

Moreover, the Index Sleep Monitor features a smart wake alarm that will gently vibrate to wake the wearer up at the ‘optimal time.’ Garmin says the Index Sleep Monitor can last up to seven nights before needing to charge. The cuff itself is machine-washable; just remember to pull out the puck to avoid any mishaps.

The Garmin Index Sleep Monitor is priced at RM799 in Malaysia and comes in two sizes: L/XL and S/M. It can be purchased at Garmin authorised dealers and online via Garmin’s official website and platforms on Shopee and Lazada.
