On June 29, 2025, Beijing became the stage for a historic football match unlike any before. For the first time ever, robots controlled by artificial intelligence (AI) played a full 3 versus 3 football tournament all by themselves, without any human control during the games. These robots had cameras and sensors to see the ball and the field, and used AI software to make decisions—moving, passing, and trying to score like human players.

This event was organized by Booster Robotics, led by Cheng Hao, a well-known Chinese inventor and AI expert. The robots competing were built by students from top universities, including Tsinghua University and China Agricultural University. Their AI “brains” helped them think quickly and work as a team, marking a major step forward in using AI for live sports competitions.

Exciting Final Match and Robot Challenges

The tournament’s final match was thrilling. The Tsinghua University team faced off against the China Agricultural University team. After a hard-fought game, Tsinghua won with a score of five to three. This made Tsinghua the first-ever robot football champions in a fully autonomous match, an important milestone for AI in sports.

Despite their skills, the robots faced many challenges. During the fast-paced game, some robots fell down and could not get back up on their own. Others missed passes or failed to kick the ball properly. Several robots had to leave the game after they could not recover. These moments showed that while the AI robots are impressive, they are still learning and improving, especially in unpredictable and quick sports environments.

AI’s Growing Role in Sports Today

Although this robot football match was the first of its kind, AI is already used in sports around the world. In tennis, AI-powered cameras help judges decide if a ball is in or out of bounds. Basketball coaches use AI to analyze players and develop better strategies. The difference now is that AI is not just helping humans but actually playing the game independently.

Cheng Hao hopes this event will lead to more advanced competitions. He plans for humans and robots to one day play football together safely. This tournament also served as a preview for the upcoming World Humanoid Robot Games, set to be held in Beijing, where robots will compete in multiple sports.

What This Match Means for Sports and Technology

Some people may feel unsure about robots being involved, as it could reduce the human drama and emotion that fans enjoy. But many experts believe robots can help improve fairness, accuracy, and safety in matches.

This kind of technology might also help smaller communities. For example, children who do not have access to good coaches might train with AI-powered systems that can guide and correct them. With smart robots or tools, more people could enjoy fair and fun sports, no matter where they live or what their background is.

Artificial intelligence is no longer just a concept in science fiction; it is here, playing a real role in the sports we love.
