Final Fantasy 16 producer Naoki Yoshida has hinted that the acclaimed RPG might make its way to the Nintendo Switch 2, marking a potential new platform for the latest installment in Square Enix’s long-running franchise. Initially released as a PlayStation 5 exclusive in 2023, Final Fantasy 16 later became available on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store in 2024. Most recently, the game launched for Xbox Series X|S following its announcement during the Xbox Games Showcase on June 8.

Now, Yoshida has turned attention toward Nintendo’s newest hardware. In a recent interview with a foreign media outlet, the producer remarked, “All that’s left is Nintendo,” suggesting the team is eyeing a Switch 2 release. Co-director Kazutoyo Maehiro echoed this sentiment, stating, “I want to do my best. I want to conquer it,” further fueling speculation of an upcoming port.

The Nintendo Switch 2, which launched on June 5, has already made a strong impact in the market. With over 3.5 million units sold in its first four days, it has become the fastest-selling console in the company’s history. Its backward compatibility feature also allows players to enjoy earlier Final Fantasy titles previously released for the original Switch.

Despite growing enthusiasm, the Switch 2 has shown mixed results for third-party titles. While first-party games like Mario Kart World continue to dominate, third-party releases have had difficulty achieving the same traction. However, Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition proved to be an exception, becoming the most popular third-party game on the platform.

Given Final Fantasy 16’s graphically demanding gameplay and narrative depth, industry analysts believe it could mirror the success of Cyberpunk 2077 on Switch 2. The console’s upgraded hardware is expected to handle high performance titles more effectively, making it a suitable candidate for the RPG.

Nintendo has forecasted that Switch 2 sales will hit 15 million units by the end of its current financial year in March. If Final Fantasy 16 joins the platform’s growing library, it could play a significant role in boosting both game adoption and hardware sales even further.
