Canalys reveals Malaysia’s top smartphone vendors for 2024 – Can you guess who’s No. 1?

By Timothy Teoh February 24, 2025

With 2024 officially wrapped up, you might be wondering which smartphone brands ended the year on a high – and which ones fell off the charts. Canalys, a global market research firm, has crunched the numbers to reveal the top five leading smartphone vendors in Malaysia for 2024.

According to the research firm, Xiaomi secured the top spot on the podium after achieving a 16% unit share in sell-in shipments, while also recording a 2% year-on-year growth compared to the previous year.

Coming in second place is Samsung, with a 14% unit share in sell-in shipments. However, the Korean giant experienced a decline in annual smartphone growth, recording a 12% drop in 2024. vivo and OPPO secured third and fourth place, with 13% and 12% unit shares respectively.

Occupying fifth place is TRANSSION, a name that might ring unfamiliar to some. The company owns a portfolio of smartphone brands, including Infinix and Tecno, which together accumulated an 11% unit share.

In Malaysia, Xiaomi leads the market with two primary smartphone lines: the Xiaomi and Redmi series. The Xiaomi lineup caters to premium flagship devices, including the Xiaomi 14, 14 Ultra, 14T, and 14T Pro. Last year, the brand also made a commendable attempt at its first-ever clam shell flip phone, the MIX Flip.

Meanwhile, the Redmi lineup focuses on price-friendly devices, with the Redmi Note 13 Series leading the charge in 2024.

U Mobile 5G Standalone (SA) now accessible to eligible postpaid customers

By Timothy Teoh February 22, 2025

U Mobile has confirmed via its official website that it has begun rolling out 5G Standalone (SA) service to select U Mobile customers. The telco states that the service will be rolled out in phases.

However, not all U Mobile subscribers are eligible just yet. For now, 5G SA is available only for users on the U Postpaid 98, U Biz 98, U Premium, and U Platinum plans.

Moreover, only compatible devices will support U Mobile’s 5G SA, all of which are listed on the official FAQ page. Supported devices range from Samsung, OPPO, vivo, realme, Honor, ZTE, and iQOO. Interestingly, Apple iPhones aren’t on the list yet, but U Mobile assures that they are working with Apple to enable 5G SA via software updates.

The list will be updated periodically as U Mobile expands 5G SA support to more devices.

U Mobile also confirms that 5G SA comes at no additional cost to users, and eligible customers can enjoy the service automatically. However, users must ensure that 5G is enabled on their devices and that their software is up to date.

Subscribers should see ‘U Mobile 5G SA’ as their network name when they are within a 5G SA-covered area.

To keep it brief, 5G Standalone (5G SA) is the “true” version of 5G, where the network runs entirely on new 5G infrastructure, without relying on older 4G LTE technology. Since the network operates independently, 5G SA enables faster response times, access to higher data rates, and several other benefits.
