BYD Dolphin vs MG4 EV, Which Is Better?

April 8, 2024

MG or Morris Garages emerged on our shores after a decades-long hiatus. It introduced the MG4 EV and MG ZS EV, two electric vehicles that cater to different demographics. The former is what we are focusing on today because it’s been placed squarely in the firing line of the BYD Dolphin and a contender for the crown of best value for money EV.

The MG4 EV Comes in four different variants, Standard, Lux, Lux Extended Range and XPower. But for the sake of this comparison, we are going to focus on the standard car. Despite it coming with the least amount of power, range and tech like a reverse camera, the car still offers excellent value for money.

Standard equipment, include:

  • Active Emergency Warning and Braking with
  • Pedestrian and Bicycle Detection
  • Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)
  • Lane Keep Assist (LKA)
  • Lane Departure Warning System (LWDS)
  • Traffic Jam Assist (TJA)
  • Intelligent Speed Limit Assist & Traffic Sign Recognition
  • High Beam Assist
  • 6 SRS Airbags
  • Tyre pressure monitoring System
  • Electronic Stability Programme
  • Hill Launch Assist
  • Front and Rear Passengers’ Seat belt Reminder
  • 10.25-inch touchscreen, 4-speaker audio system and support for Apple Carplay & Android Auto

MG also offers a 7-year warranty or 150,000km mileage on the vehicle and 8-year or 180,000km mileage warranty on the battery. This should provide owners significant peace of mind for many years to come.

Despite being reasonably priced, the MG4 EV Standard, gets a 125kW electric motor that allows it to spring from 0-100km/h in just 7.5 seconds. That’s significantly faster than the BYD Dolphin’s 12.3 seconds sprint time.

Where the BYD stands as the sole winner is with its Blade battery pack. Launched in 2020, BYD’s Lithium iron Phosphate (LFP) battery is designed to be safer, more efficient, and durable than other battery packs. It’s designed by FinDreams Battery, which is a subsidiary of BYD. The company claims it successfully passed the “nail penetration test”, without the battery heating up, emitting smoke, or catching fire.

Here’s a basic comparison between the two cars:
