The best prepaid plans for students in Malaysia: Prepaid plans less than RM40

By Timothy Teoh May 7, 2025

Given the number of prepaid plans out there, searching for one that is suitable can be a headache. It gets worse if you’re a student on a tight budget and need one that’s cheap but still provides the most value.

Of course, prepaid plans are highly personal, and it all boils down to your own needs. However, we do have some options that we feel will benefit students looking to maximize their ringgit. Here are our picks for the best prepaid plans for students in Malaysia, with prices no higher than RM40.

CelcomDigi Prepaid 5G 39 (Edisi Biru)

Before we dive into this plan, it’s important to distinguish between Edisi Biru (the plan we’re recommending) and Edisi Kuning. CelcomDigi offers two prepaid categories:

Edisi Biru offers unlimited internet at capped speeds (up to 12Mbps), plus a high-speed internet quota of up to 65GB of 4G/5G internet. Once the high-speed internet quota has been utilized, users can still access unlimited internet (up to 12Mbps), subject to a Fair Usage Policy (FUP).

Edisi Kuning, on the other hand, offers a larger high-speed internet quota (up to 75GB). However, once the high-speed internet quota is used up, internet speeds drop to 64kbps until the plan’s validity ends. Users can opt for more data with add-ons, but they will incur an additional charge.

Taking all this into account, the Edisi Biru Prepaid 5G 39 plan makes the most sense for students. At RM39, this plan offers 12Mbps unlimited internet (200GB FUP) and a substantial 65GB high-speed internet quota at 100Mbps! Assuming you’ll be using your school’s or institution’s Wi-Fi to avoid data consumption, 65GB is more than enough to last you through the entire 30-day validity. Plus, it comes with a generous 15GB hotspot.

In comparison to the Edisi Biru Prepaid 5G 25 plan, though it is more affordable at RM25, it offers slower 3Mbps unlimited internet, a significantly smaller 15GB high-speed data quota, and just 3GB hotspot.

Tune Talk Epik 35+

Tune Talk’s Epik+ plans are yet another prepaid offering that students should look into. These plans offer great value for your ringgit, but the challenge lies in deciding which one suits you best. The lowest tier Epik 25+ plan is a great choice, offering 40GB of uncapped 5G/4G data. The catch here is that it does not have hotspot. Which is why our recommended pick is just one tier above: Epik 35+

Tune Talk’s Epik 35+ plan offers incredible value at just RM35 per month. The plan offers 150GB of uncapped 5G/4G internet, plus hotspot data that counts towards the 150GB quota. That’s a massive quota pool – more than double the 65GB from CelcomDigi’s Edisi Biru plan we mentioned earlier.

However, the unique thing about the Epik 35+ plan is that its value doesn’t just stem from quota size. Among all prepaid plans in Malaysia, it’s the only one offering FREE Personal Accident (PA) Insurance covering death, total and permanent loss or disablement (total paralysis) up to RM50,000.

Chances are, if you’re a student with budget constraints, having personal insurance is often out of reach. This makes the Epik 35+ a unique 2-in-1 internet and insurance package, which is why it’s one of our top recommendations.

Yes FT5G 30

Yes 5G’s prepaid offerings are one of the most affordable, starting as low as RM20 for the FT5G 20 package. Even this lowest tier plan is pretty decent, with 50GB of 4G/5G data at uncapped speeds. However, by topping up just a little more, you can get a much better plan with the FT5G 30.

FT5G 30 (FT5G stands for First To 5G, if you were wondering) is only RM30/month. This will get you unlimited 5G/4G data at uncapped speeds ranging from 4G up to 7Mbps. Additionally, there’s also a healthy 12GB of shared hotspot available.

If you have a credit or debit card, you can get a RM5 monthly discount on the FT5G 30 plan by enabling AutoPay through the MyYes app. This allows Yes to automatically renew the prepaid plan at the end of each validity period, with the RM5 discount applied. As a result, you can enjoy unlimited internet for just RM25/month!
