ASUS ROG Phone 8 revealed at CES2024; Will launch in Malaysia by end of January

By Timothy Teoh January 9, 2024

ASUS has officially unveiled the new ROG Phone 8 Series at CES2024, sporting a few notable changes as compared to the previous years.

This year’s lineup will still consist of the ROG Phone 8 and ROG Phone 8 Pro. Aside from being 15% thinner, the devices now have much more simplistic designs, but don’t worry, you’ll still find the Aura RGB lighted ROG logo emblazoned on the rear panels of the ROG Phone 8.

The ROG logo appears on the Pro variant as well, but not in RGB form. Instead, ASUS has switched that out with a new AniMe Vision Mini-LED display. This is a 341-element display which users can customize via the included preset, or their own user-generated animations.

Camera modules has also gone through a facelift, with the ROG Phone 8 Series now donning a square-ish module instead of the horizontal vertical lineup that was on last year’s ROG phones. You’ll get the same cameras on both the ROG Phone 8 and Phone 8 Pro, consisting of a 50MP main camera with Sony IMX890 sensor and OIS; flanked by a 32MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom and OIS, as well as a 13MP ultrawide lens. At the front is a 32MP shooter.

The same goes with processors, with both models utilizing the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. You’ll have up to 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM and up to 256GB of UFS4.0 storage on the ROG Phone 8, while the ROG Phone 8 Pro will have up to 24GB of LPDDR5X RAM and up to 1TB of UFS4.0 storage.

As for displays, the series sports a 6.78″ AMOLED display with up to 165Hz refresh rates. Since it is LTPO, you’ll also have the option of adaptive refresh rates to bump battery life longer. Other than that, they have a 2,500nits peak brightness, as well as a 720Hz touch sampling rate.

The AeroActive Cooler X, which is the external fan you can attach to the back of the device, is now also more compact and portable. An interesting thing to note is that unlike last year’s Pro model, the ROG Phone 8 Pro does not come with a side opening to attach the cooler.

The ROG Phone 8 Series is also the first gaming phone to have an IP68-rated dust and water resistance.

There hasn’t been an official announcement for the pricing in Malaysia just yet, but ASUS is slated to release the ROG Phone 8 Series here by 30th January 2024.
