ASUS Begins Conquest Into Gaming Handhelds With Release of ROG Ally

ASUS will chart new grounds into the gaming handheld arena with the recently launched ROG Ally.

ASUS ROG have long been a source of reputable gaming devices, that of which includes their laptops, desktops, and ROG Phone. In fact, it wasn’t too long ago when they unveiled the ASUS ROG Phone 7.

The ROG Ally will be its first ever gaming console, and will most likely lock horns with Valve’s Steam Deck to win over fans of portable gaming devices.

However, unlike the Steam Deck, ASUS will officially launch the ROG Ally here in Malaysia…eventually. As for now, pricing in MYR is still kept under wraps, but price in USD begins from $599.

ROG Ally Specs

The ROG Ally will come in two variants running on two separate APU processors. The cheaper of which will run on AMD Ryzen Z1 (priced at $599), while the costlier Ally will run on the AMD Z1 Extreme (priced at $699).

If you’re wondering about availability, ASUS did mention that the former will only ship in Q3 this year, while the latter will arrive sooner in June. You will have free 3 months access to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate regardless of the model you buy.

ROG Ally will have Windows 11 OS installed, together with 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 512GB of storage. There is a microSD slot for storage expansion should you need it. Aside from that, it also comes with ROG’s own Armoury Crate, which grants you control over key mapping and control panel overlay, among other settings.

For visuals, the ROG Ally has a 7″ Full HD (1080p) display delivering up to 60fps and capable of up to 120Hz refresh rates. The ROG Ally supports Dolby Vision, and is protected by sturdy Gorilla Glass Victus with DXC coating to minimize fingerprints and reflections. Brightness on the Ally reaches as high as 500nits.

The AuraSync lighting that’s iconic to the ROG will see it feature in the form of dual light rings encircling the joystick.

On that note, the ROG Ally has the standard triggers and shoulder buttons you’ll typically find on most gaming handhelds. However, it does include 2 additional pedals at the rear which you can map however way you want to suit your gaming preference.

It also features dual front-facing Dual Atmos speakers for immersive audio experience.

Furthermore, the ROG Ally comes with an XG mobile port which can be connected to an external GPU for enhanced graphics. For now, the XG mobile port is compatible with the GeForce RTX 4090 Laptop GPU, or the AMD Radeon RX 6850M XT GPU.

Do note that these GPUs are sold separately.

No date or official pricing have been released by ASUS yet regarding the ROG Ally. It is being marketed pretty heavily on ASUS ROG Malaysia’s social media channels, so we should expect a release here soon enough.
